I'm not the biggest RTS fan, I like Red Alert mainly out of nostalgia and Starcraft because it's one of those games that appeals beyond the usual fanbase of the genre, like how "everyone" likes Half-Life even if they don't like FPS. But back when I played this whenever I was at my friends house in the late 90s, it stood out for various reasons and can safely join those other gamesread more on the list of "RTS I actually like".
If you're like me and don't generally go for RTS, the reasons may be similar. Maybe you find them kind of characterless and flat - like how in early Warcraft games, both sides were literally identical apart from appearances. Or how in Total Annihilation no unit really had much personality and it was definitely a case of quantity over quality in terms of design. Well Dark Reign's sides are totally different from each other and the units have personality and charisma, which makes them a lot of fun to use.
There are 13 storyline missions in the main game, and more are obviously added in the expansion. As the GOG list of features says, there are many mods. One even adds two whole new races to the game. Other cool features are the ability to steal technology from other players and use it in your own units, making it feel more like an actual war than a high-tech butting of heads.
Fans of RTS in general will have a lot to sink their teeth into while people like me who find the genre unappealing overall will find that this game does a lot to remedy the elements that usually put us off the genre.

Call my review bias. Question my 5 star rating. Doubt my memories. I don't care because this game is the game I've ever played. At least its the best $25 I ever spent.
Single player isn't anything to shout out about. The story is weak, the missions are boring though tough and lacks any real motivation to complete other than self satisfaction of beating the game. I don't careread more about Togra...but you might.
The multiplayer though is where this game really shines. Fast paced action with four diverse sides, the action is non stop from start to finish.
From massing cheap infanty units for a quick all in rush to using super weapons to demolish your enemy bases, playing against people is just great fun.

If there are two scifi RTS games besides the omnipresent StarCraft each real fan of the genre has to have played, then it's Total Annihilation and this jewel. Both have their pros and cons; while TA has the better battles, Dark Reign has - in my opinion - the better "feel" to the game.
I never played the multiplayer, though, but I enjoyed the SP campaign. Nothing stellar, butread more solid entertainment and combined with the general atmosphere of the game some really well spent hours.
If you like RTS, you can't do anything wrong with this game.
