Beautiful, but clearly unfinished!
Don't be completely turned off by the 2-star rating: maybe in a year or three, if the stars align, there'll be something here worth playing! As it is now, though, it's pretty disastrous... The game is unfinished, rushed into a release build - it's playable, sure, but profoundly broken and just sad to experience, moreso when you consider it definitely COULD be something decent. Visually, although the graphics are a mess, the art assets are beautiful! Hand drawn 'dark horse' type comic book aesthetic, pretty generic designs but they work - it's the game that doesn't. Let's run down a quick list of it: - Lighting seems non-existent, it's like they forgot to turn off fullbright. Even the original DOOM has lighting! - Audio ranges from passable to really bad, but the implementation is completely broken - enemies in front and to the right of you sound like they're dead left of you, for example! - Collisions/hitboxes are also pretty broken! Enemy shots will phase through walls and solid objects while yours get stuck in nothing! - Rendering is fucked: the different 'planes' that sprites or textures should render to are completely wrong, & you'll see stuff like enemies that are behind a glass render as if they're in front, random scenery like posters renders on top of everything despite being behind several solid objects & enemies, etc. "Fury mode" also has enemies be visible through walls (intended, I guess?), but with absolutely no effects applied to this it looks terrible, & you'll think the enemies are in the room when they're on adjacent rooms because the sprites face you. - Mechanics are half-baked or terrible - I suspect some stuff was placeholder and was 'pressed into service' to release it! The fairly important grappling mechanic is PATHETIC - feels like you're using a toy that slowly winds you up a limp rope! - Progression is simply unlocked linearly, with a pointless score "unlock" system. - Dark humor? Where? - More stuff I don't have enough room to list!
