As a provincial governor charged with spreading the glory of Rome your mission is clear – build cities, foster trade and industry, make money. How you accomplish this is up to you. Gain wealth and power, make a career out of pleasing the emperor, battle barbarians and repel invaders, or concentrate on building the next Eternal City. Fail and you'll end up as lunch for the lions. Prove your strength of mind and spirit and you just might be crowned Caesar!

To help you achieve that goal you can ask your advisors for their insight or ask the people about their thoughts. You can also build temples and create festivals to please the gods and receive rewards or aid in return. You can choose between peaceful and military assignments to prove in various ways that you deserve the title of Caesar!

A great game from a genere now past
I was really into sandbox building games when this came out and was highly impressed. Caesar 3 is remembered fondly by those who bought it - the Egyptian Pharoah / queen of the nile follow up and Greek Zeus game were brilliant moves forwards for this type of game. Its a shame they did not continue.
You will find the visuals a bit basic now, read more but the micro-management still remains high even today.
At this price you cant grumble - there is far more hours of play in this for the outlay of 6 dollars so really there is no excuse.
Take a leap of faith and buy this classic

I lost many hours to this one

I loved this game, and played the heck out of it on my old win98 box. Two things I really appreciated:
- You could play it completely sandbox, without any military stuff. I'm much more about building things than fighting, and I've always wished there were more games with this approach
- You get very fast feedback on changes you make. This is quite different from the SimCity series, read more where I often found myself wondering if something I did had any impact at all.
Happy to see this show up here, and hope we'll see more Impressions games in the future.

Great game, a real gem!

This, together with OFP, is by far my most beloved good old games, and I still have the CD laying around . I have used countless hours at this game, mostly playing the city builder mode.
There are some flaws in the game play, for example I always get my ass kicked when in combat, (and therefor I play mostly on maps in less volatile regions), and I would like the trading part ofread more the game to have been broadened/deepened, at least let the player trade with a larger amount of cities.
There is great satisfaction in creating a well functioning and stable city, but there are always new things to worry about, like the constant battle between unemployment, increasing city size and citizen happiness.
New players would probably find the game somewhat lacking in depth and missing some game play elements compared to modern titles, but still I find it to be a rewarding and satisfying game with a lot of challenges for the player.
Overall this game is probably my favorite game of all time, but I guess that nostalgia has a lot to do with that:)
