ABOUT THE GAME

Between Horizons is set aboard the Zephyr, humanity's first generation ship en route to another star. You assume the role of Stella, who was born on the ship 24 years ago and recently inherited her father's post as Chief of Security. Dive into the conspiracy behind the incident that threatens to disrupt the Zephyr's social order and foil its mission.

Between Horizons is a modern 2.5D pixel art adventure that brings a branching narrative into a semi-open world. The team at DigiTales has applied numerous lessons from their first game Lacuna and proven solutions to detective game design problems to maximize player agency in the investigation process – all the while maintaining the tight pacing of a meaningful story that will ask you to reevaluate your moral compass and make increasingly tough decisions as the situation aboard the ship spirals out of control.

FEATURES

  • An Unusual Adventure: Between Horizons merges investigation gameplay with a branching sci-fi story in an ever-expanding Metroidvania-style environment.
  • Think For Yourself: The flexible evidence system lets you assign clues to cases, confront ship denizens about them, and solve any case with at any point in time. Everything you find on the ship may or may not be connected to the mystery at hand.
  • Failure is Very Much an Option: There are no second chances — submitting a wrong solution means the story will go with all the consequences. A new and improved auto-save system will make sure there is no going back, as the story branches and ends based on your decisions.
  • Set Your Course: Underneath the game's exciting and plausible sci-fi plot lies a number of thought-provoking problems inviting you to weigh intergenerational responsibility against personal freedom.
  • A New Dimension: Timeless pixel art merges with 3D environments and modern visual effects to create a unique visual style.

Great concept, but could be better

In Between Horizons, you play as a security officer and solve a handful of cases on a large space ship. The premise is excellent, the story would make for a great movie if you can ignore or justify the biggest plothole: the lack of security cameras. The game is also a little too short, IMO; there are only 10 cases to solve in total. But your ending may change depending on how well/poorly you do. You probably won't solve it perfectly on your first try, unless you're a dirty cheater. What mysteries are there are pretty good overall. They really make you think and some of them require you to do a little paper work, which I enjoy. But I really struggled in the latter half of the game. There was a notable drop in the amount of useful evidence and support to guide me, and I was forced to make guesses based on insufficient evidence. Some examples, without spoiling anything significant: - There is a case where you have to figure out some information regarding medical records. The records are in code, like "2L3C13." One might imagine the doctors would happily tell you exactly how to read this code, but they only give you a summarized explanation. You have to figure out the exact use of the code through another means entirely. - You are given one cold case to solve. You will only receive circumstantial evidence. In other words, you must make a guess based on what was present, who was present, and their motivations, but you will not be given any hard evidence of any kind. - You are tasked with finding the precise location of something using only soft ranges, and only 1/4th of the points you are given are relevant. The two biggest QoL improvements I can think of, and would like to see, are: - Option to sort evidence alphabetically and search by name, instead of all of it being fixed in the order they're discovered. - Markers on the map to indicate who is at what location, and what locations are inaccessible, so you're not running around like a headless chicken everywhere.

Another great detective story!

Just like the previous game from DigiTales (Lacuna), Between Horizons comes with a very great story where it's up to you (and your skills) how it ends. I had a great time working on the different cases. But since I didn't solve everything right, I'll definitely play it again for another ending. :) The more detailed graphics compared to Lacuna are great and the soundtrack is fantastic and fits perfectly. So if you like a very good detective game, this one is for you!

Reasonable but

Reasonable, but... I never get why no saves where there can be different results but forced replay, just to get forced replay-ability (numbers) up. It is actually off putting and you have to do a lot of things again, and again, and again in the sense of insanity. (Not to mention unskippable parts for X time...) Such feature is more fitting for action paced rogue like games. Also a lot of bugs that need fixing, for example need to show evidence good luck with a view that does not scroll.

A great detective game

A lot of adventure/point and click games use "moon logic" - the solutions to the puzzles are not following logic but rather use the craziest and counter intuitive solution possible. Between Horizons on the other hand relies on logic puzzles. In a way the game is a series of logic puzzles held together by the story. You have a case, you collect evidence, you choose the solution to the case based on the evidence and move on to the next one. I liked the majority of the puzzles although there were a couple where the "rules" were not communicated very clearly so I was not sure whether I understand correctly the task or not. The story is fine although it is not something outstanding. I wish the conclusion was more fleshed out, but given that there are multiple variations of the ending it is understandable why the Fallout style of summarizing the consequences of your choices was used. Most likely this is also the reason why the game is a bit short. There weren't many memorable characters, but this is not an over the top type of setting like Monkey Island and the characters are down to earth instead of overexaggerated. It might seem that I am moslty poiting flaws but I really enjoyed the game. Maybe I am not looking hard enough but for me it was refreshing to play an adventure game with believable setting and logic based puzzles. I enjoyed the tame atmosphere as a great change from the epic/fantasy/slapstick comedy settings a lot of adventure game have.

Wonderful!

I didn't know what to expect when I started Between Horizons, but I'm pleasantly surpirsed. The story is solid, the voice acting is well done. The game looks great and plays well too. There were a few bugs, like Stella or William not being where they should have been during a cutsceen. Also some very minor graphical glitches here and there. Barely worth mentioning. The game was about 7-8 hours long, though I wish it was longer because I enjoyed it so much. I look forward to more games made by this developer.
