*Crash* ...That was the sound of you landing face first in an abyss filled with monsters, traps, and eldritch secrets. But hey, it's ok barbarian, you are not alone: Pip, your best friend -and mysteriously luminous bat- is with you. And it's only by truly working together that you'll be able to solve the abyss' puzzles, fight off its hungry denizens, discover its true purpose and maybe -just maybe- make it out alive with the secrets of the primordials.

Finally another great metroidvania!

Depending on one's taste, it's been quite a while since the last one. And in my opinion, Batbarian is right up there with e.g. Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge because of its innovative mechanics. Not that it has much in common with those two games. Or really most metroidvanias. It's as if its puzzling and trap elements were inspired by La Mulana but then - it is more forgiving, making it more enjoyable in my opinion. The humor reminds me a bit of Unepic - but the comedic style is very different. Then there is the bat and the companions. Familiars of course exist in a few metroidvanias but they never work like this. By which I mean they are usually not involved in the puzzles and story. Boss fights are incredibly well-designed too. And so - sure, Batbarian may have been inspired by games of the past but it puts that unique spin on them and combines those elements into something that feels unlike any other metroidvania. It even incorporates shmup elements here and there! Another thing it does that I don't recall having seen in other metroidvanias are regular auto saves. And you can pick whether you want to reload from such an auto save or the last save point. Which really helps with not getting frustrated by puzzle rooms that at times already can take some time to get through. If you had to keep running/fighting to said rooms, it would be a bit much. The only thing I really find lacking is enemy variety. About 15-20 (which even includes some that are rarely used) during the first ~10 hours and ~35 total (including bosses and semi-bosses) often feels like you're seeing the same ones again and again. And indeed, you'll still encounter the blobs from the very beginning hours later. And some minor stuff, such as not being able to skip dialogue before a boss fight, even if you already failed the fight once. But none of these flaws take away enough from all of the aspects that Batbarian does really well that it would be worth reducing the rating.

Light in the darkness

Apart from a few defects on visibility of the main character, the game is nice enough to see and hear. The mechanics offered are good and have amused me enough to get through to the end. The proposed narrative has some unexpected tricks up its sleeve that involved me for most of my session. Batbarian is a well-made exploratory platformer/Metroidvania, capable of giving several hours of fun thanks to some out-of-the-ordinary mechanics and a satisfying narrative. B-Side Metroidvania

Batbarian is a good addition to the library of people who enjoy the genre. I don't think this holds a candle to some of the top notch Metroidvanias that have come out in the past ten years. Where I feel this game really shines is in its humour, challenging puzzles, and boss fights. Batbarian has this rough Cal-Arts style to it which is generally not my favourite but, there is a playful humour and storytelling to Batbarian that matches the art style perfectly. I really do appreciate a game that can put a smile on my face. Conversely, The music and sound effects are often unremarkable but there are small things that play into Batbarian's atmosphere: the sequence when your character dies for example or a distant sound of a water droplet in a section of dungeon. The bosses and puzzles were challenging and satisfying to solve. There is an excellent variety to the bosses; the general bestiary by contrast is limited and, you will run into similar enemies throughout your play through. Batbarian was not done any favours with its clunky and stiff controls. The Barbarian/Barbarianette is not a dynamic character. You cannot duck, dodge, dooblah jump, cliff hang, or block. Additionally, your attacks don't create that small temporary instantaneous buffer between you and your enemy so, you have to be careful not to take extra damage by ramming into an enemy when attacking them. I found use of items and supporting characters clunky to use and this shows in some of the puzzles or bosses where the timing of using pip imperative to your success. The game is a rock solid 7 out of 10. It has a good story line, good game play with controls that take some time to get used to. If you love the genre or you are looking for a Metroidvania to play because you have beat the others, get this. Not all of a band's best songs were played on the radio, Burgerlord
