What's cool about it:

  • Includes the original Baldur's Gate and its expansion Tales of the Sword Coast
  • Explore the famous Forgotten Realms universe and meet some of its most renowned characters
  • Create your own unique hero thanks to the legendary AD&D ruleset

Overview:

Chaos threatens to overwhelm the Sword Coast. The state of Amn is under siege to the south, the High Moor is being overrun in the north and the region around Baldur's Gate is in turmoil. In an area known for its ample resources, a crippling shortage is slowly developing for the metal that is used throughout the Realms for everything from swords to forks - iron.

What's worse, trading caravans coming from all directions into Baldur's Gate are under constant attack from bandits and cutthroats who loot not for gold and gems but for iron. The armed factions in Baldur's Gate can scarcely keep themselves armed and the commoners are suffering all the more. Without iron they cannot mend their tools or purchase plows - and everyone knows that if they cannot farm or craft, they will starve come winter... Enthralling story, vast and rich open world, and classic Dungeons and Dragons rules and Forgotten Realms setting make this title a must-have in every self-respecting cRPG fan collection!

Classic Perfection

One of the best RPGs of all time that has all the right ingredients. Epic story, characters that you care about, interesting locations, lots of RPG growth options and a decent interface to mange it all.
Even by today's standards the game is great! the graphics are well done even if the resolution is low. The music is amazingly haunting. The interface is decent, but could have beenread more better with a higher resolution and more space.
The game never gets repetitive and there's always more to explore and experience. You can take your time discovering all the locations and characters and really 'live' the detailed world of this game series.
The manual itself is a great read and very detailed. The PDF won't give you the feel of the original paper book, but it serves it's purpose well.
The expansion adds much more to the game on all levels.
All in all, a great purchase !

Every saga has a beggining

Baldur's Gate was a revelation. It changed the way cRPG were played. And it still is great. So why not a perfect score? Well...
When i first played Baldur's Gate a year before BG2 was released, i was blown away. The visuals, the music, the atmosphere. Active pause was a welcome change for me, since i didn't really like the usual turn-based system.
I really liked the story, andread more as the years went and more RPGs came, i liked it even more. It had a non-"standard epic" feel to it. No "save the universe", no forced "chosen one" concept throughout the game up until the very end when the revelations come. It felt simple, more down-to-earth, yet "epic" in the best sense of it.
And the characters... Is there a gamer on Earth who never heard someone quoting Minsc? If you ever play the game, you will be forever stuck with "heya! it's me, Imoen" in your head. Yes, it was sometimes annoying, but in the end, it was a part of a character. A character you loved or hated, but never forgot.
So... you ask me again "why not perfect? you sound like you love the game". I sure do love it. But there is BG2. It's not "better" in the sense of story, or the characters, or music. No, it's simply different in these points. But in terms of visuals, in terms of interface it's much, much, much better.
So in the end, i went with 4 simply because it's not as "fun" to use as the sequel or newer games. But is it worse? Hell no. For and RPG fan it still is a must. Especially, if the GoG version will be compatible with fan made mods, which allow you to play the original inside BG2 updated engine. So buy it, play it and don't forget to eat and sleep.

Arguably the greatest RPG ever made

Baldur's Gate hold a very special place in mine, and many other's hearts. It's a wonderful combination of character development, story telling and combat.
I won't go into details of the story here because that is for you to uncover when you play the game, but to say the least it is wonderful told and you'll meet some memorable characters on your journey.
Being a dungeons andread more dragon game it offers what you'd expect at the start. You pick your picture, your sex, your race (from human to halfling) and your class including all the fantasy archtypes, including mage, paladin, cleric and so forth. All play fairly uniquely to each other so there's plenty of replayability, which is enhanced by Human's capacity to duel class and non-Human's ability to multiclass.
The combat is compelling, but fairly simple to one degree, click on your foe to attack. Mages and other spell casters have a tab you click on so you can pick your spells (which are prechosen by you). It's simple but can be challenging at times. Baldur's Gate is a tough game, especially in comparison to modern games. If you lose all sense of tactics and just rush your opponents it won't be long before you being cut to pieces. If your main character dies, it's game over.
Luckily, you're not alone in this quest there are numbers of NPCs willing to join your cause, they span every race and every class in the game so really can find the party of 6 to suit you, if you can find them that is :). They all have a personality and there are some engaging conversations to be had with them and many other characters.
Despite not being the prettiest game in the world, it's aged surprisingly well, aided by the classic isometric view giving a nice overview of your surroundings.
All in all by buying this game you're embarking on a PC classic. It's sequel is superb too, so check that out too.
