Another "love it or leave it" triumph...

Spiderweb Software's games have always been divisive, and Av3 is no exception. Either you can't get over the dated and recycled assets, and at times ham-fisted story telling, or you simply can't get enough of Jeff Vogel's well-paced action, and expertly done world-building and writing. First the good: Some welcome UI improvements include a breadcrumb trail to show you where characters will go during combat, with the AP to get them there. The UI for the skill tree has been improved too; information about skill progression is a lot more clearly conveyed. Furthermore, the progression system itself has been tweaked a little; no longer do you need to waste precious skill points levelling up two base-level skills to boost your mid/high-level skills. "Magical fields" (for lack of a better term) add a extra dimension to combat; certain spells and magical effects now can affect ground tiles, leading to some interesting AoE/environmental effects...including friendly fire. Now the bad: Some earlier storytelling sins (IMHO) of past Avadon games are still present. Again, IMHO, you don't get a very strong path to RP your character besides being a merciless Loyalist, or someone who's basically a Rebel in Avadon garb. What if you're someone who recognizes all sides of this conflict as being horribly in the wrong? On this note, Geneforge captured this degree of moral ambiguity much better, both in writing and gameplay. Other than that, Av3 offers up more of the same for Spiderweb fans. There are some genuinely interesting encounters and battles (as always, pay attention to the text popups!), and the writing -- for those who have come to enjoy it in past games -- is as always, entertaining and engaging. However, this game isn't going to convert anyone who isn't already turned off by Vogel's low-fi/low-budget approach to making games. For people on the fence, a large, free demo is available for the game on Spiderweb's website. For fans, it's another triumph for Spiderweb.

Cannot change the resolution

The game is great as the other Spiderweb titles. But there is one particular bug: the game doesn't change the resolution when you choose it during the startup. It would be great is the developer or GOG could solve this issue. It is very difficult to play with 1920x1080 and read a lot of text when your eyesight isn't the greatest. Please check that.

Good game, but too much backtracking

If you're a fan of the Avadon series, then this game will surely scratch that itch, and definitely would be worth your time. Depending on how relaxed or how challenging you made the game, you can expect about 40-60 hours of play time. The good: -Relatively well balanced system where you have to really think about your positioning, balance of abilities, and knowing the weakness of your enemies to get out of a situation alive. While some of the fights might seem too hard on the surface, can be doable once you learn how to manage the situation and maybe the right companion mix. -Every class has a purpose, even the shaman (the shaman saved my behind a time or two in the late game). This will make you consider your party carefully. -Decent amount of length The bad: -A LOT of walking. The characters move relatively slowly in the map. A lot of backtracking can happen that wears on the patience a bit. I ended up modding a file to speed up the walking by 50% -A couple quests are really flaky. In one case, if you leave from one region to another, it resets the quest back to its base state. In another, it's not intuitively obvious on other a couple other quests what you should do to advance it further (one involved even more complex backtracking) -Sound-scape is barren; which is par for the course for these kind of games. If you're a fan of Avadon's 1 and 2, this obviously isn't a problem -Had some flickering when using full screen mode. Wasn't apparent when I went to windowed mode The meh: -The graphics are are meh... then again if you're a fan of the prior two games, you already know what you're getting into.

I can't read the text......

Which is really sad. I have loved and adored Spiderweb games since the 90s, and would recommend any and all of them. But for some reason, something is broken in Avadon 3 and the text size is comically small, even if you toggle all the possible resolution and text size options. Others have complained about it, but not enough to warrant a change sadly. I really like the setting of Avadon. Like all of his games, the world is well thought out and the dialogue and NPCs come to life through their writing. I even prefer it over Avernum and Geneforge, which is why I am so disappointed that I cannot continue with this one. But my eyes hurt trying to read the super small text and games should be fun.

Old school RPG dosn't mean good.

Chances are if you are checking out number 3 you have already played the first two games in the series. For me this was my first game and will be my last. I didn't like the art style at all or the world setting. The game is laced with un-creative music and sounds with an annoying interface and poor combat. Many maps have un-realistic planning and placement and the games text is far too small and writing uninspired. Perhaps it is because I have read and played a lot of RPG's over the years but this just doesn't stand out and say anything to me, not the setting, not the game play not the story and definitely not the sound, music or art. Perhaps people that title themselves as hardcore old style RPG enthusiasts might enjoy it but for those of you who arn't I can't see the game appealing to you. It's 2016 and there have been too many advancements in the gaming industry to get away with turning out this even with an old style look about it. There are many other games out there that have pulled off the indie and old style RPG but for me this game represents the worst of old RPG's that is best left behind with poor interface controls. I also think the hint book and extras are poorly priced.
