Description
Attack of the Earthlings combines turn-based combat and stealth in a dark comedic single player campaign, where you the player, take control of the native alien race to defend your home world from the invading humans.

Galactoil, a comically dysfunctional energy corporation, are hell-bent on harvesting the known universe for energy and will drill anything in its incessant quest to line its pockets with profit. However, their latest foray into energy exploration on Planet X13, has placed them into a bit of a pickle. The Swarmers, the native insectoid species, have another idea - to eat all the workers!

You take control of the Swarmers, a highly aggressive insectoid species, who must convert human flesh into alien muscle, upgrade their units and even find the time to gatecrash a birthday party.

To put a stop to the invasion, the Swarmers must plan attacks carefully. Take control of unsuspecting workers, set traps, emerge from vents and hiding spots to take your human prey by surprise, and assault in groups to kill multiple enemies at once.

The more earthlings killed, the more corpses can be consumed and transformed into new units with specialized roles and unique abilities. The flesh of their own workers is the key ingredient to developing a successful alien insurgency against Galactoil.

Voice actor and Vine extraordinaire, SungWon Cho A.K.A ProZD (A Hat in Time, Paradigm), lends his brilliant voice to X13 mining operation Regional Manager Dennis Dickinham; a man both massively unqualified and massively overpaid. A gregarious fellow who finds joy in everything, be it catching a few rounds of golf with the boys or rerouting power from sickbay to the massage chairs in the boardroom, Dickinham's a delight to be around! Just never, NEVER utter the phrase "bad idea" in his presence.

The game also features an original soundtrack by composer Mikolai Stroinski (Vanishing of Ethan Carter, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Blood & Wine).
  • Play as the Aliens:
No longer should you fear the monster in the shadows... because you are them! Flip the cliche on it’s head and be the hunter rather than the hunted.
  • Comedic narrative:
Featuring 2 fully voiced antagonists and a handful of bumbling human units, AOTE avoids the cliched ‘dark and gloomy space alien horror narrative’ in favour of a light hearted and a times farcical work-place comedy.
  • Stealth:
You might have the jump on them, but they’ve got the guns! To avoid being peppered with lead, you’re going to need to utilise cover, lockers and vents to avoid detection and setup the perfect execution.
  • Unit Evolutions:
Specialise your smaller grunts by evolving them into 1 of 3 different upgrades each with its own purpose and job.
  • Mutagen Ability Upgrades:
Customise your units even further with additional mutagen abilities that are unlocked using points awarded based on mission performance.

Light entertainment

I just finished the game. It was entertaining enough for the most part. Humans invade with a strip mining ship that is run by a corporation with all the tropes associated with corporations. There are 7 levels for the ship that you have to clear from the bottom to the top. As you progress the humans get new types of units and you get/upgrade to new type of units. I should mention that while this game is turn based and labeled as strategy I found it more similar to a puzzle game. Enemies have 25 hp, your unit deals 25 damage, enemies get a unit with 35 hp, you get a unit that deals 35 damage, they get a unit with armor, you get one that can bypass armor, they get a unit that explodes on death, you get a range unit. So it's more about solving a puzzle by finding the scissors to their paper, less a strategy. Apart from matching your units to the enemy, part of the gameplay is based on stealth. Since most of your units can die in one hit you will have to sneak around and plan your moves. You gain points after each level based on your performance. You get less or more points based on your performance, if you lost units, killed more humans, took less or more turns than expected, finish extra objectives. In between levels you can unlock different upgrade to your units using those points. Before each level you can respec freely. Overall the game was entertaining without requiring a huge investment of time and "skill". I easily finished all levels (with some loading - as I said it's more of a puzzle than tactics game). The game took about 10 hours to finish, and by the last level I was growing bored. I'm happy it did not overstay it's welcome.

Excellent game

Excellent game. Loved the witty and dark humour of the game. The game is a bit short and quite simplistic, felt a bit «definitely not AAA game». That's the only reason I gave it 4*. Worked flawlessly on my Ubuntu Linux 20.04. I did NOT have to accept any abusive Terms and Conditions to play the game.

Loved it but was not entirely satisfied

The game has great concept, VERY fun mechanics, satiric, black humor. I would recommend it to anyone, but the problem is with the length: the game has only 7 missions (plus a very short and simple tutorial), each around 1 hour of gameplay. There are a lot of great mechanics, but since the game is relatively short and not really hard (so you won't restart missions with different strategy and mutagen setup), you simply won't even try out all possibilities (I know, you can replay any level, but if you've beaten it once you won't replay it just to try something different). In the Steam version you have at least some challanging achievements which adds to the play time, but the GoG version sadly lacks this. Still a good game (you only have a few unit types but all of them are increadibly useful and the mutagen upgrades really make them better, the map designs are cool and the humor is genuinely good), but a map editor/package, random maps, challanges, etc could have made this game a true masterpiece.

Turn based with challenge and humor

I liked the graphics, humor and wit of this game. At times I felt like I was playing chess almost in certain situations, you might have to think about what to do for 10 minutes or more. Then when actions don't go as planned you have to rethink your strategy with what you have left on your turn. Replaying a level doesn't go down the same, the computer is thinking against you and I like that. I liked how you could use ductwork to get around and hide. I also liked how you can mutate into other classes. So you could use the ductwork to get somewhere distant quick and then mutate into a creature too large to travel through that ductwork. I didn't like the traps the aliens can make, they didn't do anything, you would assume they would maybe stop an opponent for one round or give them 5 points damage or something, but they just walk through it with I stepped in dog poo animation or something. But everything else was great. There is even side missions on top of the main mission for extra mutagen credit to upgrade your units for the next mission. I would have liked the game to have been a tad longer, but that is just because I enjoyed playing it. It was normal length. Would have been nice to have a 2 player option, where one player can be the aliens and the other the humans just for kicks. It's original enough to be a keeper, and a part 2 with even more options and alien types would be welcomed. Or a version with zombies instead of aliens. There was a couple instances where I wished I could just bite one of the soldiers and infect them with alien rabies and control them for a turn or two. All in all the game is solid, voice acting is good, the jokes are good. The controls are easy to use. The AI is challenging enough. It's not XCOM and it's not trying to be. It's got it's own thing going on. Thumbs up

Fun, but a bit too simple and short.

Probably best suited to for those who generally don't engage with turn-based games. The mechanics are very simple and the game does not offer a lot of complexity. It is also quite short, but it's probably for the best, because by the end, the game has exhausted pretty much all scenarios it could have thrown at you. You start levels with your "commander" unit (Matriarch) and use her to get the first couple kills, eat corpses for biomass and proceed to spawn your units. The basic spawn can then mutate into 3 sub-types (all cost additional essence). A stealth/assassin unit, a tank unit and a ranged unit. You then use those to go through the levels, usually trying to find a way to dispose of the enemies in a way they don't do any damage to you. There is also one special unit which the Matriarch can make, called Drone, where you can take over one of the civilians and then use it for free scouting as enemies generally don't shoot them. The Matriarch also has large vision range, making her ideal for scouting/spotting. You can also upgrade between missions, each unit having a grand total of 3 upgrades. They can be pretty impactful, making the game even easier. You won't be able to get them all, but can freely swap them if you don't like one of them. The stealth unit is by far the most versatile, the others you will mostly use just to counter specific enemy types. Speaking of which, there are only a couple of them. All enemies also have very limited movement (half of your units'), which makes outplaying them and their pre-scripted patrol routes very simple. The game is presented in a satirical tone (big greedy corporation bad!!!). You play the indigenous species of the planet the big bad corpo came to mine. There is some voice acting for the 2 main baddies, but otherwise, all NPCs just mumble with text bubbles. Zero replayability, but fun for the 6-8 hours it's going to take you to beat the game. Worth it with the 80% discount the game has pretty much all the time.
