Disappoinment

Being a huge fan of AoW1 and AoW3 I was looking forward to this game. I really wanted to give this game 5 stars but I can't. :( First thing that hit me was very bad color palette choice. It's easy to miss thing on the map, because it lacks value contrast. This translates to bad map readablity. Most of the special structures don't give much clue to what they do and the game completely lack an option to toggle some form of icon hint that would make it easier to get into the game. It's a sloppy design that forces you to memorize what structure does what and to learn to spot hem. All my friends voiced the same opinion. Apart from that graphics is detailed if you are willing to study it closer. After a few games the game becomes flatout boring. I think I miss the more meaningful promotions from AoW series. Now it's just some generic +5% accuracy twice, some hp and "ultimate ability" usually in form of another passive minor bonus. I no longer care about the units as I used to. Unit mods are a bit of a mess. Ranging from MUST HAVE to fillers with circumstantial usability at most. Bad cover system. As in it really hard to tell from which hex your / enemy cover counts and from which not. This completely wrecks the tactical game as it's centered around covers. Zero explanation on www or in their help. Some maps have varying altitudes. That's great. Except you can't tell which hex is supposed to be how high. Selecting flying units and moving them around to specific hexes is a huge pain. Hero progression is lackuster. There are abilities you have to take and you take them. Period. TERRIBLE ops system imo. Just failed covert ops with following success chances (In row) 80%, 80%, 80%, 90%, 70%, 85%, 85%. And I am in a mission that's centered around them... Bad UI? Glitch? Feels like X-com hit chance. You mostly miss unless it's 95%. Probably just bad luck. Achievements came later, they didn't take into account my already completed campaign missions. Multiplayer was stable-ish.

Broken by Paradox...

I installed the game a while ago, messed around with it a little, and decided to play it again recently. I opened GOG Galaxy to see if there was a way to disable the DLCs. Instead GOG Galaxy downloaded an "update" which was to install the Paradox Launcher, which won't work, and I've been trying various solutions in forums for an hour to get it to work, but nothing. It's really sad to see a great studio like Triumph get absorbed into the Paradox mess. I'll update the review if I eventually get it working. As for the game, they really needed to re-think their menu system. There is no indication of what the various game modes mean. I like the old "multiplayer" or "Single player skirmish" options that every other game uses. I shouldn't have to go hunting on Google to figure out how to start playing a game.

*There is a reason for the bad reviews*

Verified owner 4.2 and all together 3.7 says much about gogs review system. Most comments i read here getting pushed by shitstorm DLC Crybabies who hate the game without even knowing it. I played them all, HOM 4,5,6 Civ 4,5 and AOW 1 and 3. This game is no copy of one of these it's a new game with a healthy mix of all these mentioned and i enjoyed it. I played it with my gf and we both played more than 100h together, she likes it just as much as i like it and is new to the genre. That much said about all these overly complicated guys. The premium Ediiton is full of content and is worth ur money twice they really polished the game with every DLC. And yeah it is their marketing style to count on DLCs but thats also the reason why Paradox games are that rich of content. All in all u get something for ur money and i would highly recommend it to u ( speaking for the premium edition), if this is a genre u enjoy.

It's not that bad. Some pros some cons.

Pros: 1. Good Strategic stuff. You wonder about a planet as the Faction you want grabbing land and finding old ruins, scfi-fi ruins and stuff. You do some resource grabbing, cash building, research for ever better sci-fi kit, etc,etc against other competing AI Factions. 2.The good Tactical old chess piece turn system for battles remains which works very well and allows for indepth or fast tactical thought depending on your tastes. You ccan your teeth into some really meaty tactical battles. 3. The AI is not bad. It generally knows how to counter everything. It gives me a good kicking once it starts getting all its forces together. be wary of war with them! 4. Diplomacy is quite indepth as well, form alliances, go to war, pretty indepth. you can even annoy them by making outrageous demands. 5. Huge amount of Sandbox campaign options, which I prefer way over the scripted childish story campaigns. this pretty much gets the game to 4 stars. The meh! 1. Not exactly the most imaginative game for a sci-fi. It's basically Age of Wonders III reskinned. There are some typical sci-fi units, but no really knew or interesting units or game mechanics. for instance how boring can the DLCs be? Paladin aliens, ugly amazon female aliens (gee what a surprise). 2. Music is nice. The ugly. The character clothing/ face/hair customisation of your leaders/heros is very spartan. It pretends to give you plenty of custom options, but there really isn't much. Hairstyles, face styles, poses are so few, maybe 10 per faction. Terrible. Also female characters appear to be made intentionally ugly, they are basically ugly butch men. Only the females of the Paladin (DLC) kinda look ok. The Devs just don't want to do pretty women. I'd love to see at least 50 more customisations of clothes and hair at the very least. Anyway, if you can get past that it's not a terrible game. They get a grade C, must do better.

More Combat than Civ

Overall I like the game. If nothing else it has more combat in it than a Civ game, and the victory conditions generally force you to engage with your neighbors. The graphics are fine in my opinion, and despite being partially color blind I haven't missed any units. I will say that while there is a large amount of unit variety, this is almost to the game's detriment. There are simply factions that I prefer to play more than others. I would generally prefer things if there was a more stable cadre of base units with fun mechanics layered on top. As it stands though, the units are just different enough to annoy me. After a few games things can start to become repetitive, but I wouldn't say this is to a greater degree than other strategy games.
