Hello all,

I have a question for people who are more familer with the expantions than me (I have never played them before).

Twice during WC1 SM1 one of the wingmen died for no reason that I can find:

During the mission against the captured Exeter ship Spirit was with me right up to the time to land but afterwards was listed KIA, however there was no funeral scene

After the mission were you simply have to kill the cat's attacking the Claw I looked at the kil board and saw that Cptn St.Jhon (Hunter?) was listed as KIA even though I was not flying with him, again no funeral scene.

However when I started SM2:Crusade they are both alive again.

Is this suposed to happen? or is it a bug, if it is a bug is it just me or is it common?

Can anyone fix it?

any help or advice would be most apreciated.

It is indeed a bug... back in the day they made a patch to fix this but I guess GOG was unaware of the issue. :( Oh well. Maybe they'll fix it

I just found a referance to the bug on the Wing Commander CIC website the wingman bug ONLY HAPPENS IF YOU USE THE PILOT TRANSFER SYSTEM and scince GOG dose not"officialy" support the transfer system they probably don't know about the patch or at least did'nt think to include it.

I'd like to but I can't find the actual patch anywhere... maybe our friends at GOG will see this and find it for us :)

You can find the patch at WING COMMANDER CIC website

But be warned the patch don't actualy fix the problem, it lets you edit the save to bring the wingman back from the dead, plus it don't work for crusade.

The patch actually DOES fix the problem. If you run it on your savegame before you hit that point
then it will fix the issue so that they never die in the first place.
The actual link to the patch is here
http://download.wcnews.com/files/wing1/wc1sav.zip

Unzip the contents to the GAMEDAT folder in the Wing Commander 1 directory and use DOSbox to run it

The same problem exists on SM2 but you can use this on WC2 by inputting the command line
parameters "CRUSADE.WLD" into dosbox... so after mounting your folder and all that in dosbox
the line should look like this:
C:\>WCSAV.EXE CRUSADE.WLD
(or whatever drive letter you assigned it to)

I downloaded the file and read the data on properly this time.

If I understand it correctly running the program, at the start of SM1 or 2 should stop the problem from happening at all, correct?

From what I've read here, there seems to be some confusion about how to use the Save Game app fix, and what it can do, so I'll clarify:

1. Having transferred a character from WC1 to SM1 or SM2, a couple of your wingmen may be susceptible to un-announced deaths after some SM1 or SM2 missions. To resolve this bug, at any point, download the zip from the URL posted earlier, and drop the files in your 'Wing Commander 1 and 2\WC' folder, inside your GOG games folder, wherever that is located.
2. Copy your WC1 shortcut and rename it so it says 'Save Game Fix' or something.
3. Right click that icon and choose Properties.
4. In the 'target' area, change the text that says "..\WC\dosboxWC_single.conf" to "..\WC\dosboxWC_save_fix.conf"
5. Looking at your WC folder, copy the "dosboxWC_single.conf" file, and rename it as "dosboxWC_save_fix.conf"
6. Edit that file using Notepad (there are a few ways to do that, one is to open Notepad, then drag/drop the file into it)
7. Replace the line that says 'loadfix -1 wc' to be one of the following:
a) if you want to edit an SM1 savegame file, make it say

WCSAV.EXE GAMEDAT\SAVEGAME.WLD

a) if you want to edit an SM2 savegame file, make it say

WCSAV.EXE GAMEDAT\CRUSADE.WLD

8. Run the new shortcut you created earlier and you should see all of your SM1 or SM2 savefiles.
9. Use the cursor keys to highlight a save that you want to edit/fix and press Return. For example, let's say I have two savegames - one is from before a wingman will later die without notice, and one is after that occurred. For the former, you can edit this save and unmark the soon-to-be-dead wingman from KIA to ACTIVE to prevent the death, or, edit the second save and do the same to bring them back from the dead.
10. Within a save game summary, use the right arrow cursor key to proceed through the fields until you reach a 'KIA' that you want to change. Press + on the keyboard and it will flick to ACTIVE.
11. Repeat for any other saves.
12. Press ESC once to return to main menu, and again to save the changes.

All done, bug fixed.
