Vyraexii: maybe but then agaon they did put their eggs in steams basket already
and may not want to move unless it becomes necessary
avatar
rampancy: I remember someone once posted in one of the early GOG vs. Steam/Steam vs. Everyone Else threads, the "Don't put your eggs in one basket" argument, and someone else replied with something to the effect of, "I *WANT* all of my eggs in one basket. That's why I choose to buy my games mainly on Steam."

I found it really amusing that someone completely failed to understand the meaning of that idiom.
yeah i agree with you there it is amusing
since having their games on steam and here on gog opens up an extra revenue source since there are people who hate steam and buy games from here

also bethseda could be pissed at gog having the fallout series for free just b4 they had to take them off the store

Roxolani: So you think if GOG become as big as Steam, Bethesda will pick GOG?
avatar
darthspudius: Why do they have to pick just one? I think if GOG were bigger they'd have more interest. Wouldn't you?
And what about DRM?
I think it's a very real possibility we will see bethesda on GOG eventually. I would imagine that some companies are growing concerned with the directions Steam is heading. And well, Steam is the market leader... this gives Gabe and crew leverage.

If your a multinational corporation involved in the games industry, wherein a great deal of your userbase is the PC market, and it's growing (or you see that it's growing and want a slice of the pie). That same market that leads to your titles "value" being consistent for years, because of simple things like community made mods. You don't want the retail chain pulling the strings.

Putting their games on GOG could send a message to Steam, that it's only relevant as long as it has "quality" goods. I don't care what some steam lover might say, if a game like Fallout 4 was PC distribution through GOG only... goodbye steam as market leader.

And all of this is why companies like Disney are happy to release titles on GOG. It erodes steams importance, and once again asserts Disney's.

Smannesman: Publishers don't really 'join' GOG as much as decide that they're somewhat 'worthy' of their time.
Mostly though they just see $$$ in their eyes.
It would be nice if Bethesda decided to release some games here though.
Of course if they do they'll also feel its fair that people buy their games again, even if they own them somewhere else.
To be 100% honest, I would buy every single Bethesda title released here on GOG. The only limitation would be on money.... that said I would make it a priority to collect them all, every release.

Rusty_Gunn: once galaxy becomes a flatout requirement to play a game for more than the multiplayer (which I don't play). that would be the end of the road on my journey here.
avatar
rampancy: And I actually do see that coming in the future: Galaxy being required to download/manage/install games, patches/updates and bonus material, with the website becoming more and more inconvenient and labyrinthine to use. It'll be packaged as yet another Good News!(tm) update. Publishers will like it as it affords them more control, and will prompt them to release more of their games on GOG, thus allowing GOG to expand further. Newer uses and people crying out for their favorite games will rejoice. The last of the "old guard" will fade away, mourning the GOG of old.
You are both a little to "conspiracy theory" the only major change is the lack of development of the GoG downloader. Direct downloads still exists and will always exist for all content. Galaxy will forever remain optional.

As someone who doesn't really care about it, What about DRM? As everyone keeps ignoring the original Fallout games don't have DRM on Steam, so what? Isn't that a positive sign, a good thing?
avatar
karnak1: I was only using Piratebay as an example. One can get a game Torrent out of several sites :)

The issue is that I started pirating games because I didn't want to install Steam. And it seemed that 80% of games from 2005 onwards required a Steam account.

As soon as GOG entered the market I stopped pirating games.
avatar
Rusty_Gunn: yeah, for me Steam made piracy very tempting when it became the only means to get the games I care about regardless of the medium the games were on. for example I would likely have bought both FO new Vegas Collector's edition & the ultimate edition but I ended not getting either one in any form
May I ask is the OP correct?

Is there a chance Bethesda will arrive on GOG? (Or at least Fallout games?)

We don't know.

Maybe? I could see Bethesda selling their older titles here and I can see them pig-headedly staying a Steam-exclusive publisher. Neither is outside the realm of possibility.

Isn't that all we want? We are not asking for Skyrim, Fallout 4, Doom 4, Dishonored.

We want the really old games that came out relatively before Steam.

The first 3 or 4 Elder Scrolls games
Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics
First 3 Doom and Quake games
Wolfenstein 3D
Hexen and Heretic.

That is all we want. Emphasize that on their Twitter feed.

Actually, we do want them all. We just happen to be very sensible and realist people. ;)
