We all love the freedom of choice and accessibility that come with DRM-free games, and we also enjoy titles that are meant to be played online. One of them is an iconic multiplayer game from BethesdaWolfenstein: Enemy Territory which is now available for FREE on GOG with our dedicated servers!

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is an online-only game - you play by connecting to a server which you or someone else runs. You can also play alone (vs. bots) by hosting your own game, or by setting up a local area network (LAN). This game was built to enjoy with others however, and so we've set our own GOG servers to play with y'all.

It's a true 2003 vanilla experience that you just gotta try and hunt down those pesky soldiers with “GOG” tag in their usernames. We’ve heard there will be plenty of those guys there!

In order to do so, all you have to do is get the game on GOG and join one of our servers. Here’s some details about them:

EU Server IP: 51.89.94.120:27960
NA Server IP: 192.169.92.211:27960
Game Type: Campaign
Maximum Players: 16 (8v8)
Mods: None
Friendly Fire: Yes
Punkbuster: No
Anti-Lag: Yes
Max Lives: Off
Weapon Restriction: Off
Moderation: Not this time baby

Our servers are up live now and will be until November 18th, 7 AM UTC. All you need to join is the IP. See you on the battlefield!

Alongside that, we’ve also launched a special Bethesda Halloween Sale. Check out amazing titles like Dishonored 2, The Evil Within 2, Prey, Doom Series and more with discounts up to 85%! Sale lasts until November 1st, 10 PM UTC.

To read more about how we want to approach online-only games on GOG and to share how you feel about it, check out our latest GOG 2022 UPDATE.

Bethesda seems to be in a killing spree, thank you!

Schnuff: Fun fact: GoG doesn't allows player from Germany to download it
avatar
Clownski_: Correct, as was requested by the publisher.
May I ask why? Enemy Territory was never under any restrictions around here, to my knowledge. Bethesda's out of their minds again, it seems. There is no legal reason for them to do this.
I read about Bethesda bringing this back with dedicated servers and the default 6 maps with the default 2 rotations of 3 maps 1 or 2 weeks ago. Apparently the game received some renewed interest from gamers during the covid lockdowns.
Based on the stuff I read I did check some links but never got to firing it up. There's even an open source client for it: ET Legacy

About 15 years ago I played this a lot. It was the 1st multiplayer game I ever played. Unfortunately at some point the sheer amount of cheaters spoiled the fun.

There's 1 absolute must for this client: ET minimizer
It allows you to alt tab, play windowed, etc.

KRAFTWERK2K1: Why the hell is this blocked for Germans again? >_> this makes absolutely no sense. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was never banned in Germany and never contained any symbols that german Authorities hate so much. What kind of stupid anti-german decision is this again?
avatar
wolfsite: According to this:

https://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_wolfenstein_enemy_territory_for_free_with_dedicated_gog_servers_and_bethesda_halloween_sale_66b07/post10

It was done at the request of the publisher.
But WHAT was the reason? WHY was it requested? Nobody seem to be able to answer it. Bethesda could have already checked the legal situation in germany a LONG time ago prior to the GOG release. Blocking us Germans again makes zero sense for a game that never had legal difficulties in Germany. The whole situation is just absurd.

You would have to direct that towards Bethesda, GOG may be under an NDA to not discuss the reasons.

It is also blocked on Steam. They did this silently earlier this year. The reasons are not known.

Edit:
If I have to guess then the problem might be that it has no USK rating. Enemy Territory Quake Wars has a USK 16 rating, but Wolfenstein Enemy Territory is still unrated.

Untrue. Wolfenstein Enemy Territory was rated USK 16 as well.

toma85: It isn't untrue.

Look here:
https://www.schnittberichte.com/svds.php?Page=Titel&ID=67303

or search for the entry on the webpage of the USK:
https://usk.de/?s=Enemy+Territory

It has not rating.
Just checked OGDB again just to be sure. It has a PEGI and ESRB rating.... so if that's the case, Bethesda refuses to pay for an USK rating, which they had all the time and money in the world to pay for. Just wow..... Makes me sick to the core that i actually supported this publisher by having bought their latest Skyrim Special Edition GOG release.... when they are such cheap traitors.
Very nice indeed. I somehow expected Bethesda to ignore GOG completely after they shut down their launcher and moved to Steam, but since then they have repeatedly proven me wrong in a good way.

PixelBoy: If you need LAN, then it's an online game.
Nah, LAN and online games are considered to be different
For Multiplayer, we have 4 different options

Multiplay players on one screen, all input devices connected to the same console or computer (in the case of Polytron up to 8 players on one keyboard)
Direct connection (serial for example, that's how we played the first Doom games)
LAN
Online - which ALWAYS means a connection to the outside.

You can have several computers connected through one switch in your LAN, and still be offline.
And no one would ever say that 2 directly linked computers are online or that your smart phone plugged in on your USB port is online. They are connected, yes. But the term 'online' is not used for that.

As life often teaches us, when large organizations make stupid decisions like this, you then quickly learn how to circumvent them.

Or if Germany just ditched the system they, as the only country in the world use, and swap to one of the two systems the most of the rest of the world uses, it wouldn't be an issue.

Does not really make sense for Bethesda to go and pay for a USK classification for a 20 year old game, that's free of charge. Yes, it's "only" 1200 Euros to get it but still, it's an expenditure for no return, which corporations generally try to avoid as much as possible.

Is it possible to play offline and alone vs bots in the vanilla game (like Quake III or Unreal Tournament) or am I obliged to download some mods ?

Come on, Bethesda, now re-release Enemy Territory Quake Wars !

In vanilla (like on GOG) no, you need install separate mod. Or download open source port called ET Legacy which among others have integrated bots.
