CarrionCrow: This comes to mind for turn-based Mech-type games. Not a lot of selections since Microsoft took the Mechwarrior property and shoved it up their ass for over a decade.
For more first-person based items, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri here on GOG might fit the bill. Again, there's not a lot of selection when you take out Mechwarrior and Heavy Gear.
Ixamyakxim: Shogo is here, and was an amazing game but that doesn't really play like an "old school" Mechwarrior - it's all about fast and fluid mechs.
Xbox 360 had an AMAZING game that I sunk a TON of hours into. Allowed a hideous and awesome array of mech customization - however it was mainly a multiplayer game and the servers have since gone buhbye. But if they ever made it, I'd DROOL for a Chromehounds sequel. If anyone ever wants to hear old "fake war" stories, that game had some fantastic mechanics.
Come to think of it, there IS a current console series but the name escapes me. I think it involves mech customization but again features a "faster" more nimble breed of beast than the ponderous traditional Mechwarrior / Battletech machine.
Thanks much for the suggestions! Terra Nova struck the husband's fancy a bit - we'll take a look tomorrow and see for sure. The Xbox suggestion(s) are appreciated, but not only do we not own any generation of them, I refuse to give them any money. They got two controllers' worth out of me for PC games, but that's my limit. We're a generation behind on Sony and Nintendo, too, although a PS4 may end up in our household by early next year.
On a different note: Does anyone have any advice for getting rid of the smell of bleach?
We have a roommate who's over-appreciative of its cleaning benefits and likes to use far, far too much of it when she mops/wipes down counters/etc. I realize I can re-clean what she did, and I might do so tomorrow, but it's certainly not going to happen tonight. (My husband reacts terribly to bleach, it makes me nauseous, and our cats don't like it, either - and she insists on using it even though she knows all of this. Suffice to say this is not a person I'm fond of.)
ETA: Just realized which game you pointed out, Crow. We downloaded that and installed it on the husband's laptop, but it doesn't seem to want to run correctly. He's on Win10, but compatibility settings don't seem to be working. I can't remember exactly what the problems were; I may take another look at it tomorrow.
