Mod Spotlight: THIEF™ GOLD and Thief™ II: The Metal Age

Sneaky? Sneakier? the Sneakiest? Thief!

Want to enhance your Thief™ experience? Well, GOG.com, yours truly, has prepared a guide to some of the most common community-created mods to upgrade your Thief experience with higher resolution, better textures and many new missions. The beautiful Thief community deserves a lot of praise for the hard work they’d put in making those modifications possible. Congratulations from GOG.com.

THIEF™ GOLD all-in-one fix
Our user voodoo47 (thanks!) has prepared a nice little package with most important graphics fixes, prepared by many Thief modders. Read the thread about it and download the fix here. This package contains:
- DDfix: fixes issues with modern graphics hardware, fixes cutscenes, prevents some crashes and errors, changes the hardcoded resolution for menu screen.
- Thief Enhancement Pack: a lot of improved models & textures
- Other small fixes
Note: to avoid any problems it is advised not to install the game in a protected Win folder (like /Program Files or /Windows)

If you feel like THIEF GOLD is too easy (i.e. you're clearly Garrett), you can also try the Ultimate Difficulty Mod.

Thief™ II: The Metal Age mods:
DDfix: you need to download both DDfix and fixed Thief II .exe file
Thief Enhancement Pack: improved models, textures
NTEX high-res texture pack: 136 new textures
Ultimate Difficulty Mod 2: for the most difficult Thief II experience

Fan-made missions:
To play Fan Made missions for Thief you will need DarkLoader from http://darkloader.net/.
1. Download and extract DarkLoader 4.3.1b Package
2. Run DarkLoader.exe
3. Add mission directory (where you will store .zip missions), TG and T2 directory.
4. Don’t bother with any error messages. Run DarkLoader.exe again, select level and play!

You can find A LOT of maps here: http://www.thiefmissions.com. If you don’t know which ones to choose, visit this thread from TTLG forum which is a great guide to fan missions. Here’s a few missions we found particularly interesting:

THIEF™ GOLD:
Bloodstone Prison
Autumn in Lampfire Hills
Calendra's Cistern
The Saint of Redmound
Lorgan's Web
Events in Highrock
The Mystery Man
Shadow of Doubt (campaign)
Lord Edmund Entertains!
Sepulchre of the Sinistral

Thief™ II: The Metal Age:
Calendra's Legacy
Relic - Left4Dead
Ominous Bequest
The 7th Crystal
The Art of Thievery
Lord Alan's Fortress
Rowena’s Curse
Inverted Manse
Dracula Reloaded
Bathory - The Campaign

T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age
Also, you can check the unofficial Thief II expansion: T2X: Shadows of the Metal Age, which features 13 new missions, ten new weapons and hundreds of new models, textures and sounds. Visit http://www.thief2x.com/ to find out more about the project and download.

Note: We’ve tried these mods out ourselves and haven’t had any problems with them, but whenever you install programs off the Internet or modify a pre-existing program, you’re doing so at your own risk. Our legal kobolds advise us that we need to tell you that we aren’t responsible for any damage, loss of data, or Chuck Testa that may happen to your computer as a result of trying out these mods. Back up all your saves, back up your backups, and strap yourselves in for some awesome sneaking action!

SimonG: Well, we have the wiki, which is open for everybody to participate ;-)

*nudge*, *nudge*
I've no problem with using the wiki, but as a gog user of some time at least, I hadn't heard of it. You know why I hadn't heard of it? Because the wiki isn't referred to on the game pages either.
24
I believe each game page should have also "Mods" section listing the most popular and well made mods for the game, for example Fallout 2 restoration pack is practically a must for me now, same goes with other games

Roman5: you know what would be REALLY awesome?

If the mods could remove the first and second Thief game from the wishlist...
Yes, i agree
The wishlist needs some serious Moderation and upcleaning
There are stuff in there that arent even games, and evrytime i se a new completly unrelated wishlist add thats not a game i lose a bit more faith in humanity, sigh.

And why on earth is people voting for games that can probably never be here?!
CS (Counter-Strike: Source) is owned by valve
and valve is steam.
The chances of it getting here is microscopic.

SimonG: The "Mod Spotlights" should be stickyed in the relevant forums. Or at least mentioned on the gamepage.
Indeed. I can find easily this topic in game's sub forum when bought or I need.

TheEnigmaticT: Sure, but most forums already have one stickied thread; do I really want to add another?

Such decisions keep me up at night. 0.o
One or the other is fine. Whichever is better. Absolutely though they should be included on game pages, and prominently.

For Russian fans please add these huge fan-site link - http://darkfate.org/

As far as including links on game pages, that''s been done, with Planescape: Torment, and I agree that it was very convenient. So I definitely support doing that.
31
Good fan mission picks. I'd also highly recommend A Night in Rocksbourg for Thief 2 - a series of three missions (fourth one on the way) filled with custom textures, sounds and awesome atmosphere. My personal favourite, especially the third one.

Seriously, it's quite staggering how great some of these missions are.
32
Nicely done.

I am a little disappointed that Tafferpatcher is not mentioned for Thief II.

To be fair, I have not tried it on the gog version yet, but I understand it works nicely and in my view it is the best community patches for Thief 2 yet.

it contains several fixes in one package:

"- DDFix 1.1.1 by TimeSlip, DDFix 1.5.5 and 1.5.11 by Jermi
- Widescreen Mod by Weak-Ling
- Multi-Core Fix (same modifications to .exe that FlipTIB by MoroseTroll does)
- Texture memory error fix
- Free space error fix
- Dromed 1.18 with TGA texture support
- Sheriff Guard Model Fix by R Soul
- Ferns Model Fix by Winter Cat
- Gas Arrow Model Fix by R Soul
- Gas Lamp Model Fix by Winter Cat
- Vine Arrow Model Fix by Winter Cat
- Fog Fix in LoTP by Winter Cat
- Dialog Fix in Shipping by Winter Cat
- Dialog Fix in Masks by Nameless Voice
- Fixed loot location in Running Interference and Kidnap
- t2skies and t2water mod by Jermi
- Enhancement Pack by Nameless Voice
- NTEX texture pack by thief_gotcha"

GOG! Have I told you lately that I LOVE YOU? I do!

Guys and gals, you have no idea how happy you made me by releasing this spotlight on Thief related mods. My life is now complete :)

Excuse me now, I have to play...
37
@amok
Thanks for package for Thief 2. Now I can back to game.

It's only me who play that series conversely?
Thief 3 DS ->Thief 2 MA ->.Thief DP

I got only problem with ffdshow.ax, game doesn't start. Whem I replace MVES folder somwhere else then game work excellent. And looks good in 1920x1080. Good job, man.
And never know how to use hex way to install, so sad. This can allow me to launch this on polish version from 1C.

Got Windows 7 64bit. Suprise - second PC with Vista 32 bit works fine, except GPU which dying and not allow me to play more than hour :/
39
Thanks for the mods they will help greatly.
40
Man, I head out for a weekend and come back to find unexpected load on good old thiefmissions. Happened by GOG to notice this thread.

Thanks for the props, GOG folks.

Definitely like the idea of having a link on the game page to the mods spotlights
