This is a good RPG if you can ignore how far it strays of Vampire: The Masquerade

If you don't know much about the World of Darkness or the old Vampire: the Masquerade and enjoy a more classic style RPG with multiple party control, you'll enjoy this game. It at one time had fantastic online play were you could design your own 'adventures' and a few persistent 'guilds'.... full review
However if your a fan of the old Vampire: The Masquerade you'll pretty quickly notice how much this game strays from the structure of the PnP game. From the inclusion of levels from a dramatic change from the 5 point system to 1-100 system and a great many small differences (such as the huge number of vampires you'll kill in the game, to being able to drink a vampires blood with no hint of diablerism or vampiric laws).
But if you can ignore the differences and what it does wrong, it's still a very enjoyable and classic RPG game. I rate it a three because as a fan of the Old World of Darkness it can grate at times, but for anyone else it's likely a 4.
In the end I'd prefer to see Vampire: Bloodlines which is by far a superior game and was easily the best RPG of year (if buggy, which has been largely fixed and the game expanded upon by community updates.)
In the end this game is totally worth the money, just keep in mind don't expect it to mirror the PnP game in the slightest bit.
I got this game back when it was brand new after following the development with great interest. I'd never heard of World of Darkness at the time. As such, most of the dialog about the politics of the vampire world went over my head with the first playthrough. I did a bit better on the 2nd. By the end of the 4th playthrough, I had finally memorized the groups.... full review
It's a linear game. There are no sidequests. You can go wherever you want, but advancing the storyline requires you to just follow the quest log. There are shops to buy arms and armor. You get to upgrade skills as you go. There is a ready to go multiplayer mode for those who want to play their own custom tabletop feeling game, but I never got into it.
The setting of the game starts during the crusades and jumps forward to the new millennium. The storyline associated with the jump is amazing! It's fun to see the character try to adapt to the new situation as well. I've read several World of Darkness books since playing this game, and I must say, this one has the best plot and main character by far.
The folks saying "Bloodlines is better" have some merit. The graphics in Bloodlines is better. The quest variety is better. The plot and character development though, this one wins without contest.
Buy this game. Play it. Play it again years later and still enjoy it.
VTM:R isn't a particularly bad game, but it doesn't stand out as particularly memorable either. The combination of medieval and contemporary settings is a novel idea, but the game takes a long time to get going leaving the medieval section mostly forgettable. Running into some of the characters from the medieval period again in the contemporary setting adds a nice twist. Also, despite... full review the addition of various firearms in the contemporary part of the game, I found myself mostly relying on melee because it needs less micro-managing.
The gameplay itself is completely linear and the city / town environments between quests are very small leaving let sense of exploration. The quests themselves are run of the mill kill your way through a dungeon until you reach the end and the plot moves forward. The game has three endings, but nothing you do until the very end makes any difference as to which ending you get, so it's just a case of saving before the final battle and then reloading to see all the endings. The graphics show their age, but actually aren't that bad once you get use to them.
If you are really into vampires, or are a big fan of RPGs, you'll probably enjoy the game. If you're more of a casual fan of RPGs (or not a fan at all), you could probably skip it.
