Praetorians is set amidst the political machinations of an emerging Roman Empire. You will be transported back to the dusty battlefields of Egypt, the combat theaters of Gaul and finally to the heart of the Empire itself, Italy in the crusade to become Emperor.
Your quest will not be easy, as the Empire is heavily defended by thousands of different troop types and war machines, all with special skills and individual strengths. The road to becoming Emperor depends on strategy! You must learn to combine your units and exploit the weakness of the enemy, but as you get closer to the Emperor things become even more difficult as you must face his personal guard, the most powerful and deadly fighting force in the Empire...

An RTS that will punish you if you fall asleep at the wheel. The A.I will try and ambush, overwhelm and slash at any exposed flank as you try and kick them from the map. The graphics still look fine and Praetorians incorporates several features such as terrain bonuses, unit specific abilities and with some units capable of entering heavily forested areas; useful for setting... full review up your own ambush or flushing out an enemy unit. The units for the most part are squad based, formations and facing are easy to maintain, and you have the choice to merge squads together that have taken casualties so as to keep them up to strength.
Each map is quite challenging in itself, and whilst you can call up reinforcements from captured towns it is still essential to use your units wisely or you will find yourself losing ground instead of gaining it. Commander units, medics and auxillary squads able to build siege weapons or towers and two forms of scout are all necessary for success.
Praetorians is a very polished RTS with a robust A.I and well thought out maps that give the player chokepoints and terrain advantages to exploit. It's an RTS with the emphasis on strategy, plot development and lengthy cut-scene's have no place in this war of attrition. It can sometimes feel like too much of a grind and it's not a game to let you relax but when victory is claimed you will certainly feel like you have earned it.

Suprisingly good and enjoyable. Good made unit menagement, nice graphic and sound effects. It's RTS, not any Real Time Wargame like Total War series but tactic and stretegy is most important and it's all you have. No buildings or resource gathering. Pure strategy and fun.
If you are looking for some old RTS game that differs from most games in the same genre, Praetorians is probably what you are looking for. The game was made and released back in 2003 by Pyro Studios and Eidos Interactive.... full review
It is a different RTS game. As soon as you start it, you'll notice that there are no resources to micromanage. The only "resources" in the game are your troops. They can be purchased when you capture new settlements/villages. And, the more they fight (and survive, of course), the better they become. Think of it like some sort of an experience-gaining auto-upgrade system.
The game features three single-player campaigns and also multiplayer. You can play as the Romans, the Barbarians or the Egyptians. The missions are fun and can be at times a little hard for some players that are well into the RTS genre.
I don't know if the GOG version has them, but few unofficial patches have been released that fix bugs left in the game. You can search for them on the net, they should still be available for download somewhere.
