Set in the aftermath of a world-wide nuclear war, Fallout will challenge you to survive in an unknown and dangerous world. You will take the role of a Vault-dweller, a person who has grown up in a secluded, underground survival Vault. Circumstances arise that force you to go Outside - to a strange world 80 years after the end of modern civilization. A world of mutants, radiation, gangs and violence.
Your immediate task is to find a replacement for the broken water purification controller chip. Without that chip, your fellow Vault dwellers are doomed to dehydration or will be forced to leave the safety of the Vault for the Outside.
The core of the game revolves around your character. Fallout uses a skill-based system to allow you to fine tune your character. As you gain experience (roughly half from combat, the other half from solving adventure seeds and non-combat events), your character will grow as you determine. Combat in Fallout is tactical turn-based. You can take as much time as you need to make decisions. Choose from different types of attacks, with a variety of weapons and attack skills.

The first game in my step for complete love for interplay.
The game is an Isometric, Turn based, RPG. There is A LOT of dialogue, so if you are illiterate, then this game is not for you. Also, I agree with a previous reviewer, that the game is slow. Sometimes if you are facing a multitude of enemies who all know you are there, you WILL eventually act but... It can take awhile. Also be forewarned as to butcher jet heads first! : )
Just a quick comment as others have already expounded on how awesome this game was when it came out originally, and how generally buggy it is. I thought I'd shed a little light on how it's been since I started playing it again for the first time in years.... full review
It's slow. *Painfully* slow. You click, you wait. You click, you wait some more. Then things happen... slowly.
Now, there is an in-game option to speed things up, which helps a bit, but there doesn't seem to be a middle ground. It would be great if there was a way to tell whatever DOS-emulator they're using that you want a processor that is more like a Pentium 90 and less like a 486 DX2 66.
Otherwise, I'm having fun with it. It's a great old game. :)
Don't miss out on playing Fallout. You'll regret it.

This game is amazing. Especially considering how old it is and how it holds up over time. There really is an amazing story here and one that is open ended as well.... full review
As for the graphics, well they're great for a game that came out in 1997. I was expecting it to be much worse than it actually was. The quick skill selector is a little sad though. It doesn't tell you what skill you selected to use unless you look it up and memorize it or select the skill through the menu. Other than that the only other thing I can see fault in is that the game is very slow. Battles and traveling feel like you're waiting for the bell to ring and school to let out. It is still fun to play and explore, it just requires some patients. I guess it's today's games that are to blame. Things are so much faster now a days in general that it's probably just a sign of the times rather than the actual game play.
Fallout is a great game that shouldn't be overlooked. It should be played by all RPG fans who love deep stories and unique game mechanics with humor in such a serious situational game.
