XIII is probably one of the most interesting games I've ever played.
An FPS with stealth mechanics, unique (for its time ) design and looks, fitting and engaging soundtrack and intriguing story that mimics 70'/80' spy movies.
Even for today's standards, it is amazing how the story can slowly make you interested with its convoluted and yet simple narrative and its graphics are something truly show how this game aged so well.
It is not perfect, however, since it does have, however, some unrefined features when it comes to the gameplay, both stealth and shooting feel not truly optimized and leaves something to be desired, but besides that, it does amazing job mish mashing the mechanics.
So, it is worth buying? Yes! even for someone who doesn't like shooters but can still enjoy its art style and story.
Finally got to play this after seeing it in Nintendo Power years ago: strong, linear basic shooter with a fair bit of stealth. Takes a while to get into the groove of its design (i.e can't zoom-aim with all weapons, but you do have a dot-sight) but its simplicity was refreshing, plot was quirky and gameplay was addictive. 10-15 hour play time I think.
Good:
-Technically, graphics still look great, and you will repeatedly get a GoldenEye vibe while sneaking around military facilities, trying to crunch enemies with throwing knives.
-Each weapon has a "secondary fire" (i.e. revolver does a Wild-West rapid fire, M4/AR rifle has a grenade launcher, etc.)...
-Fast-paced,wacky plot and characters that feel very 1960s: haven't read the Belgian comic, but (in the best way possible) this feels like a story being told by an excitable 12 year old who watches a lot of spy movies
-Voice acting with Adam West!
-The harpoon, for the 10 minutes you get to use it
Frustrations:
-THE SAVE! YOU NEED TO MANUALLY SAVE WITH F5 EVEN IF THE GAME CONFIRMS IT SAVED... I lost my first 5 hours because I trusted it.
-Checkpoints... oooof
-No real introduction level, so you are also thrown into the controls in a bit of a daze (when I finally
got the grappling hook, I was reduced to pressing every keyboard button to figure out what to do). -Game puzzles not always clear: many times, I concluded there was a glitch. restarted the level, then finally figured out a new dynamic that might have just been introduced and will never be used again (hint: all bodies are mobile).
-Many stealth missions offer shrubbery in which to hide, but it seems to only be decoration (enemy sprites will see you and shoot at you). And anyways, stealth generally just depends on how quickly you can headshot everyone in the area.
-Submarine level :(
All in all, a cheeky game that has some confusing elements, but otherwise worked flawlessly on Windows 8.1, and kept me entertained through 3 evenings.
I have loved this game since the first glimpse in May 2004 thanks to the free demo. After seeing the super unique visual style and super polished presentation I was hooked.
Having seen the remake from 2020 only reminded us all how timeless this piece was (and how unnecessary remaking such a game is). If you play the original in at least full HD with improved FOV, it simply looks way better.
Anyway, did y’all know that it’s possible to play the online multiplayer again and there are more 24/7 servers than ever before? Simply install the latest 1.4.2.1 patch from Arthur (thanks, Arthur!) and you’re all set. The patch also includes all the HD/widescreen mod and all important updates for modern systems.

I love this game in every way. The story telling, modability for resolution and gunplay BUT
The menu has mouse problems where up and down doesn't work.
The game is made for 4:3 so
THERE is the second BUT play it on a PS2 (or xbox) with a Sony PVM Crt monitor (or a normal crt which is made before the cheap 2000s crt) and enjoy one of the most beautiful games in standart definition.
I wanted to play more FPS games, but in a forum some time ago, someone recommended this game to me and despite the difficulties and fixes with the previous computer to play this game. Several years later, i see that XIII is on this GOG platform, i could finally play this game with windows 10 (with compatibility mode), when i started this game, i returned to the nostalgia of the 2000s with the resolution (which i couldn't change it) and play with various weapons and levels and also with items that can be used, which is important to pass several levels. The funny thing, i never knew that this game would be related to a comic, for something it was a good idea for the developers to put onomatopoeia in the game, it's very fun to do it despite being "inside a comic". I recommend this game, since it was never recognized by other people and by other means, the game is very fun.
