I honestly wasn't expecting much. Super Meat Boy felt like such a quintessentially 2D experience, with its fast paced precision running and wall-jumping. Meat Boy Forever was... well, better than I had heard, but was nonetheless rendered pretty bland by its pointless procedural generation. Surely going 3D would be even more of a jump-the-shark moment for the franchise?
Well... no, surprisingly not. 3D meat boy feels a lot like 2D meat boy, in how he runs and how he jumps. The 8-directional movement keeps the movement precise and keyboard-friendly. And while 3D platforming comes with its share of inherent issues regarding the camera, every stage (in the demo) feels well thought-out in this regard.
I also appreciated how they kept the replay feature at the end of the levels. I always liked watching my dozens of attempts all die in various ways, often en masse, until only my one successful meat boy remains. That was such a key feature of Meat Boy, and I'm glad to see it's back.
I've already wishlisted the full version. I think it'll be a hit!
