Thanks but no thanks

I suggest avoiding this game. It contains third party software with the intent on collecting data upon you as well as a EULA (which is not mentioned anywhere on this store page) that lists a buttload of restrictions upon the user including a section that forbids modifying the game in anyway so by agreeing to it you are legally barring yourself from the use of any mods. If they had been upfront about this I wouldn't have wasted my time counting the days till it's release.

Avoid this game

The game collects private data on you, and you'd never know unless you read the agreement. There's also no option to opt out of it, and they explicitly state they are not responsible for what the tracking application does with your data. Agreement: The Game uses PlayFab to collect information about e.g., your gameplay and device. By downloading and using the Game, you agree to the collection and use of this infor-mation by the third-party tools, as set forth in their respective privacy policies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these third-party tools. After finding all of this out I wish I could refund the product. I never signed up for being spyed on. I will make sure to never buy from this dev or publisher again and make sure to tell as many people as possible to avoid them.

I want the game, not the 3rd party crap

I was really looking forward to this game. I tend to hold off until I’m not playing another game and it’s on a good sale, but anticipated games like this I buy full price on day one usually. This time I delayed a bit and I’m glad I did. There’s a reason I get games on gog. I don’t like DRM if I can avoid it. I also don’t appreciate third party software that takes my data and who knows what they do with it. Sure, you can claim that the data is generic or doesn’t collect specific PII, but from what I hear this one does. And even generic data can identify easily with the right tools. Why is there a need for this data collection? Why does the developer need third party software anyway? None of the other games had anything like this that I recall. Steamworld has gone from one of my favorite series to something I want to avoid like a plague overnight. There’s already too much of my data floating around. No thanks. I’m done.

DRM and Spyware

The developers of this game thought it was necessary to have you agree to their terms of service in order to play the game, which includes the fact that YOU DO NOT OWN A COPY OF THE GAME. They explicitly state that you are only being granted a license to use the game, but you do not own an actual copy of the game, which goes against everything GOG supposedly stands for. Also, part of the agreement states that they are free to collect your data, so it actually comes preinstalled with spyware. I can't believe the developers of Steamworld are pulling this crap. What's even more surprising is that GOG seems to be okay with it.

Simple Fun

First off, I absolutely detest EULAs in single player games and endorse the current one-star review for ripping into this game for having one. I *will* note that after much backlash, the devs have removed data collection, saying it went further than they intended/realized. As for the game itself, it's a simplified city-/dungeon-builder hybrid. If you're into complex 4X-style strategy games and the like, and like to be challenged, you can safely move along. This is not hard, not stressful and a single playthrough took me about 10 hours. This is more of a casual title, probably ideal for newbies or those just look for something to wind down with while listening/watching something else. (I don't actually know if there even is a fail state for the game.)
