Great Parkour and Exploration Game

This is honestly an amazing game for the price point. Controls feel very tight with great traversing mechanics so movement flows from one action to the next. Combat is simple but affective with a parry mechanic a bit more forgiving than other games. Graphics in game are really well done for this style with simple colours that make it easy to point out types of terrain, enemies and collectables. It's an industrial world with oranges and greys but it's quite vibrant which explains the comparisons people have made to Mirror's Edge with it's simple colour system. The world has a lot of vertical paths and encourages exploration to find collectables. Honestly do not sleep on this game.

Satisfying parkour, with a nostalgia

Game consist of smooth parkour Elements, easy to understand combat, and short rest segments that allow us to put our chainsword away for a little while, to talk with a protagonist P and gather some of the in-game lore. The game World is set in a giant structure designed with straightforward and clean terrain, thanks to the implemented scanner we can easily see the placement of the enemies, checkpoints and the orbs. The former which are a form of Collectibles around the levels which we can keep track in our main menu in case we want to 100% the game. Thanks to the many customization options we can easily adjust our game to our preferences, i'am manly speaking about the camera options. Where after setting them to cinematic I again felt that like I was playing Shadow of the Colossus. Thanks to the build-in game selfie mode we can change the expressions and body posture of P and make some pretty nice and cute screenshots. Not to mention the one thing that i still miss to this day in more games, a fully interactive main menu, where if you “poke” around long enough you will find out a new way of closing the game ;) Overall a very nice game for a low price.

Style over substance

Motorslice absolutely nails its presentation. I'm a big fan of the low-poly models combined with pixel-art textures. The environments have the same deserty ruined industrial theme, which may bore some, but I appreciate how it fully explores its one visual theme with enough variation between areas to keep things fresh. The game also has a fantastic sense of scale; you can often look into the distance to see areas you visited hours ago as you ascend this massive structure. The soundscape is usually quiet and atmospheric, with music kicking in at just the right time to emphasize when the game's pace picks up during combat and platforming gauntlets. The bosses act as giant moving jungle gyms that you climb while slicing through their weak points with you chainsaw-sword, with the camera zooming out at key moments to emphasize their size. The game camera physically exists in the world as a drone that the protagonist will make eye contact with and have cute interactions with in story cutscenes. Motorslice has a ton of style, but what drags it down is the junk gameplay wedged in between its stylish moments. The vast majority of the game's runtime is dedicated to yellow-paint platforming. In the more handcrafted, linear sections, the player simply needs to press the jump button while holding the general direction of the next highlighted platform, pole or wall, and the game takes care of the rest. In the more complex or open-ended areas, however, you'll be constantly fighting the game over control of your character. I'd estimate the game can correctly realize your intentions about 90% of the time, with the other 10% often seeing you careen to your death. Basic movement options are also missing, such as a safe way to descend from ledges, or the ability to cancel a misinputted wall-run. Having played the demo before buying, I fully expected the game to require plenty of patience for this kind of jank, as not even the triple-A games which inspired it could nail this sort of semi-automated platforming. Yet the game was already wearing on my patience by the end of the third of eight chapters; it simply forces you to engage with it's flawed mechanics for far too long. Compounding on the excessive runtime are the optional collectible orbs, which require completing more dangerous platforming challenges. I tried to find all of them at first, and while some of these were fun to grab, by the game's halfway point I was sick of constantly scanning to see if I had missed anything, wondering if the next jump would lock me out of getting an orb. I looked it up and it turns out there's absolutely no reward for getting them all. Given how much the game leverages its protagonist's appeal, you'd think these orbs would unlock outfits or something. Occasionally you'll need to clear a room of enemies, which all go down in one hit. These sections are very easy aside from when you die to bad platforming or an off-screen projectile and have to start the whole thing over. Overall the combat does its job of providing a change of pace from the platforming. Actually, the enemies were best used late in the game, where slashing a flying enemy allows you to jump in midair. Chaining this move with wall runs to cross giant chasms actually brought some interactivity to the traversal, and was a suprise highlight for me. Finally, the story is pretty sparse and mostly relies on the protagonist implying some vague lore during cutscenes. The ending is also pretty unsatisfying as it doesn't resolve any mysteries about the structure you spent the game climbing, The game feels like the first half of a complete story. I still think the the game's full price is perfectly fair for the content, but the movement frustrations make it tough to recommend. Honestly this game's demo is the perfect vertical slice; I would only recommend getting the full game if you have a ton of patience.

Rough around the edges

The world is enjoyable to watch. It has a lot of good vistas, and picked my curiosity all throughout, but it's a pain to traverse sometimes. Inconsistent fall damages and overly-aggresive checkpoints makes backtracking (and thus exploration) very difficult. Forget about collecting all the orbs, because if you accidentally visit the correct path before the bonus one, or simply die in the wrong place, some orbs will be locked away from you, practically *by design*. The controls are not very flexible. Parkour either goes exactly as you planned, or fail and kill you on the spot; if you fumble anything, there's no leeway for recovery. You don't have control over the finer details of movement (zero air control, fixed-length jump...); the character just does what she thinks is right for the context, and she'll often do something completely different from what you intended. Fanservice was a selling point from what I've seen before realease, but even that is not very serviceable. I'm not sure exactly whether the game lack respect for its character, for its player, or for itself but it definitely does at least one of those.

Princess of Urbania: the Simps of Time

An ambitious and long-awaited project, Motorslice is finally here... And I'm happy to say that its promises have (mostly) been fulfilled! Motorslice is an attempt to revive the type of parkour mechanics you could find in early 2000s action games: it's all about running on walls, grabbing ledges and hopping from pole to beam, and frankly? That's something a lot of us need more of. The controls are intuitive and the movement satisfying, ensuring a fluid platforming experience with a very respectable length! Combat-wise, Motorslice alternates between nervous duels where the first to get hit dies, and battles against colossal machines that feel more like climactic puzzles than actual boss fights. While some may find this approach lacking, I personally liked its simplicity, as the meat of the game is in the platforming anyway. Motorslice complements its gameplay with a neat sense of storytelling and art direction (setting aside how strangely horny it is towards its heroine). Its expansive world built with bright colors and chunky polygons often inspired a sense of awe in me: the narration is minimalist, but still makes you root for Slicer P and wonder about the weird future she inhabits. Sadly, in spite of everything it gets right Motorslice can be hella janky at times. Too often will you have to fight against awkward momentum, imprecise movements and chaotic physics, and the quality of the level design can be quite uneven: failure very often isn't your fault, and that's a MAJOR issue. Also, while the game encourages you to hunt for collectibles, doing so can be a miserable endeavor that I recommend avoiding entirely on a first playthrough. Overall, while the game is at times very frustrating, it has more than enough to make up for it. If you like platforming games in general, Motorslice will have something in store for you. And if you're a fan of Prince of Persia, the Tomb Raider Legend trilogy or Mirror's Edge, giving it a shot is pretty much mandatory!
