介绍
Key features:

  • Meet a vibrant cast of fully-voiced characters
  • Enjoy a magical soundtrack by Lena Raine
  • Make your choices by seeing their future outcomes
  • Unravel a mysterious and emotional story, and discover multiple endings
  • Play as Polly/Harmony, an Oracle of two colorful and rich worlds

In the very near future... When Polly returns home after a few years abroad, to look for her missing mother, she quickly realizes that her hometown has drastically changed. A megacorporation named MK is using its power to control the population, and her community is in danger.

She soon discovers that she has a gift of clairvoyance that connects her to Reverie, the realm of the Aspirations of Humanity: Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth. In this world, Polly becomes Harmony, a goddess who has the power to choose the Aspiration that will ultimately rule over Reverie and restore the delicate balance between the deities’ world and ours.

The fate of humanity is at stake. To which destiny do you aspire?

As Polly, or Harmony, each action you take will affect both worlds and send you down sprawling narrative paths. See into the future and explore the consequences of possible choices in the Augural, a game board and visual representation of Polly's gift of foresight. In pursuing whichever destiny you desire, you’ll also bond with and obtain crystals from the Aspirations. These will unlock different paths at important crossroads that will change how the thread of the story unravels, and ultimately the fate of humanity.

Whichever Aspiration comes to lead Reverie, with Harmony’s help, will also become the heart of humanity. Their personality and style of rule will change Reverie while also giving the people of our world a new direction too: when the link between worlds is stronger, Reverie has a bigger influence on the state of our world.

Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth are all wildly different entities with their own distinct personalities, goals, and opinions on how to make things better. You’ll get to know each of them as visit Reverie in your dreams as Harmony, but only you know best – as Polly – what your world needs.

As you play, revel in artistic direction that is bright, vibrant, and futuristic. Immerse yourself in the daily life of a Mediterranean city and get to know its people, with a cast of characters who are fully voiced and animated. Enjoy an enchanting soundtrack by award-winning composer, Lena Raine.

Beautiful, memorable experience

To clarify: I played this on Steam, but I think that there are no differences between these platforms. Harmony is an incredibly beautiful VN with a lot of branching. Branching can depend on your previous choices, can lead to specific outcomes and affiliations with certain Aspirations, god-like creatures you have to communicate with throughout the game. Honestly, I loved everything about the game: art (especially characters design), writing, music, animation, topics that it raises throughout the game. I find myself still thinking about this game from time to time, which is the best compliment I can give. However, keep in mind, that despite all the unique features, it is still a visual novel, so don't expect a more classic adventure game. You will mostly follow the narrative and choose which direction it will take.

Standard of storytelling to Asprire to

At its core, Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is a branching visual novel experience which excels at storytelling through the decisions taken at the Augeral. The Augeral is an interface which allows the player to select present- and see possible decisions in the future. The system is made engaging through the use of crystals relating to the different Aspirations (Harmony's pantheon) which may require a certain number be acquired to unlock important decisions. From this, there comes a form of meta-decision making in which you have to plan out smaller decisions (some which may go against your ideals) to make way for larger ones. In a really clever piece of design, certain decisions will remain hidden until more decisions are made before them, creating an underlying tension which encourages players to focus on value-orientated decision-making (rather than becoming an exercise in tracking crystals). The writing is excellent - the characters, the setting, and the interactions between elements feel authentic. The complex relationships between different aspects are explored and given time to mature in a way which feels meaningful. Special note should be made of the naunce and depth which are given to the Aspirations with regards to the ideas they embody and the novel ways which they can be represented (for example, Truth can represent knowledge and information, but they can tend towards singlemindedness and the consolidation of group-thinking into a kind of mono-thought). The presentation is immaculate and really elevates the experience, 3D elements and some animation work brings life to the beautiful backgrounds in which the scenes take place. Key moments at the end of chapters are also goregously animated leading to a visual experience which punches far above its weight. The voicework and performances are memorable and come across as directed with clear intention. My only criticisms would be that the UI for the Augeral could be a little unclear. The game has a system of notifications which tells you about certain decisions being unlocked, but I still found myself surprised to have missed pre-requisites around conditions requiring multiple inputs, or to have misunderstood which paths could be cut-off depending on seemingly unrelated decisions. Thankfully frustration was minimal as you can restart any Chapter within any Act so long as you do not complete the Chapter. Otherwise the story, whilst never overstaying its welcome, does have some (depending on your preferences) questionable pacing in the later Acts (where bigger themes seem to resolve quickly in a way which is undermined by the quality of the buildup achieved in earlier Acts). Overall I had an excellent experience with Harmony: The Fall of Reverie. Having completed a 'main' playthrough and then having went back to select decisions to get all of the different endings, I was left with the best kind of uncertainty. One that prompts further thought and will likely colour the way I see things, understand people, and think about the world. I would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in story-driven games and would encourage completing it in a handful of sessions to let the weight of the interaction of themes carry the most meaning (An Act a day keeps the meta-narrative consequences in play).

What more can you ask of a Visual Novel?

At the time of writing this review, it seems to me that ratings for this game are split almost evenly between those who loved it and those who hated it. I personally loved it, but I noticed that (again at this time) none of those who rated it poorly reviewed it, so I thought about leaving a review focusing on things that people may not like about it, so if any of the following points bothers you, just steer clear of the game :) * Genre & Game Mechanics ** If the screenshots are not a big enough hint, the game is a visual novel (VN) so you should not play it if you don't like VN. ** The one innovation wrt a traditional VN is the fact that the main character (MC) is given the power to see the future, so the player is able to see the branching structure of the VN as a graph made up by nodes (the game scenes) connected by arches. The graph is visible only up to a point in the future, but the player can see if visiting a node is a prerequisite for visiting a given future branch or vice versa would cut off that branch permanently. The player also gets a sense of the direction in which their choices are bringing the story forward. The nodes contain a description of what is going to happen, but in general/somewhat ambiguous terms, and for some of them the description becomes visible only when you get close enough. All in all, I think that this mechanics ensures that you will not get stuck in a bad branch without spoiling the story too much, on the other hand it also means that there are no secret routes in the game to discover, which VN fans might miss as a feature. ** The game only allows you to reload from the last completed scene, or roll back the entire chapter and start by scratch. I normally don't like this but since the MC can see the future (see above) you are not likely to miss the ability to save at will during a playthrough. However, replayability suffers from it because the game contains A LOT of branches and several different endings, so trying a different route means starting from scratch and unfortunately there is no auto skip function for the text already read. * Graphics and Sound The production values are through the roof for this VN. I really cannot see what one could possibly not like about it... * Story The most important part of a VN in my view, also the reason I suspect the ratings are so polarised... ** The story is set on a fictional island in the near future (one of the youngest characters is said to have been born in 2010, and to have had a name change at 18, so I estimate 2028-2030 whereas the VN is from 2023) on an imaginary island. The MC however has the power to switch to an alternate dimension called Reverie, populated by supernatural beings embodying the aspirations of humanity, and the story explores how events in Reverie and Brittle (the "real" world) affect one another. From a technical standpoint, the story is well-written, I struggle to see how someone could argue otherwise... ** The events unfolding affect the island a whole, but the player only gets to interact with a handful of (well-written) characters. Some reviews point out that these characters are all involved in non-conventional kinds of relationships (I try to be generic here so as to keep this as spoiler-free as possible). While relationships are a big part of the story, I don't think the game is pushing any particular agenda, these details are all handled very naturally and stay for the most part in the background of interactions among characters. In the end, it is up to the player to guess whether this is just a peculiarity of the MC's family/friends, a general feature of the island, or a statement of the developer as to how they think the near future will/should be. ** The story does get political in its criticism of unrestrained capitalism and of leaving essential services to private corporations. I think it is a pity that the corporation MC and friends/family struggle against remains faceless throughout the game, although its actions must necessarily be the consequence of someone's decision. This may be narratively justifiable, but feels like a wasted opportunity, since the game does a great job of letting the player know the characters on the MC side enough to sympathize with them or at least understand where they come from (and some of them have quite evident flaws). Beyond the politics however, the message of the game is fundamentally positive, to the point of being almost naively optimistic about the ability of human beings to cooperate and live (as the title says) in harmony.

Splendid art and game mechanics

As I wrote in the title: this game has a very beautiful line and cgi art, and some good mechanics that stick you to it until it's finished and make you want to replay it more times. Even if it is a visual novel, it has some compelling mechanics: you can see glimpses of what will happen and choose the line of the future you prefere, based on some pseudo-archetypical characters that live in a parallel world: each choice make you collect power for one or more of these embodiments of concepts, and what will happen in the story is determined by to which pseudo-archetype you decide to give power. About narration and characters, it is all well written, intelligent, real, and surely you can see a great love instilled in them by the developers. But... even if politically I'm totally with it, I found the strong political message deleterious for the narration. Of six major characters, all of them are in some degrees belonging to a relationship's social niche (two lesbians, a non binary couple, a polyamorous couple). That's not a problem per se, but, since the age and the world in which the story takes place are like ours, it doesn’t sound statistically realistic and seems a little forced in order to send a political message (like some Netflix shows...). Even the fact that we never see a "villain capitalist" face can be read in this sense, like a de-humanization of a political and economic group. Yes, I think we are in times where a political message is needed, but I wonder: where's the limit between propaganda and art? If I have to give an answer, I see the limit in the extent and wideness of your message, in how many symbolic strata your work can carry (let's take for example Eisenstein: his movies surely have a strong political message, but they primarily carry an ideal, a symbol that takes place in a determined social-political situation). All elements in this game narration - and even the pseudo-archetypical characters and world - are set to support and encourage a social-political point of view. We cannot abstract them to other situations, to an individual or philosophical point of view: we are bound to that view. That’s symptom for me of a narrow narrative point of view.
