Don't make installing Galaxy the default setting in standalone game installers

Include an OPTION to download Galaxy if you must (opt-IN, not opt-OUT), perhaps something as simple as a prompt to open the GOG Galaxy webpage. But don't bundle a full Galaxy install into every game installer, and for gods' sake, don't make people have to uncheck an option in order to NOT install Galaxy.

It's pretty offensive that GOG would copy Steam in this area. They're relatively DRM free by comparison, but still come with the EULA (which is DRM). If they dissolve their competitive advantage by shoving Galaxy down our throats, then there's no reason to stick with GOG.

The BIG annoyance is that Galaxy starts up, and than start to download "updates" for all your installed games to add the link to Galaxy. You have to restore all your links to be able to start the game without starting Galaxy again. <br /> <br /> PLEASE DON'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not having to install client crapware is one of the reason many of us chose GOG instead of Steam. This low blow hasn't passed unnoticed.

I have an issue with having Galaxy as the default choice. I am on a limited monthly internet cap 20GB normal and 20GB between 2400 and 0500. I have a Desktop PC and a Laptop. If I use Galaxy or the GOG downloader I would have to download the same file twice. Whereas if I download using Firefox I only need to download the file once. I also use Linux. I also download the Linux game files using Firefox. As aprevious poster said Galaxy should offer you a choice of download option. The other thing about Galaxy that annoys me is that it does not ask you where you want to install the game. By default you can change the game folder. The place to change it is not that easy to find. Whereas if you use the download file to install you can very easily browse to where you want to install the game. I do not like installing games In the C drive. I just found out this week that the Galaxy Client is not compatible with all the games available on GOG. Atlantis 2: Beyond Atlantis is an example of this. <br />

Yes!! Please turn Galaxy off as the default choice when running the installation of a GOG game. I'm sure that the Galaxy client isn't obtrusive or annoying, but the reason I buy games from GOG is to avoid using any client whatsoever.

The thing I have against Galaxy being default is that it is not very clear which one is going to be downloaded unless one takes care to check very closely, which might mean having to download a game again just because of that. <br /> <br /> Not the world, but annoying.

I don't want to have Galaxy installers bundled with my downloads since I'm archiving my games on my NAS and nobody needs a hundred copies of a years old galaxy installer on his NAS. <br /> Just had to download 100 GB worth of game installers again because I didn't realize they now bundle Galaxy.

Very poor decision indeed. I take it as a warning signal that GOG may have become less trustworthy and that it is time to look for alternatives, in case of other future missteps like this one. As I user, I may want Galaxy for some games because many of its features are nice, but I strongly dislike this sneaky attempt to force me into using the client. You are a niche company for users (like me) unwilling to give up to the Steam mentality; if you lose this argument, you may already sell your business to Steam, they have more games, more features and better prices. Please don't be screwed by your own mistakes. <br />

Even though I have Galaxy installed (by choice), these new installers diminish the number one feature of Galaxy GOG has been championing since day 1. "Optional". Sneaking Galaxy into someone's installation will only drive people away from GOG. Please reconsider this decision.

Yes, I would heartily support this. Right now it is so awfully random as to which game have the galaxy-installers as the default, that I have to re-download every other game. This is annoys the hell out of me. I would be grateful for a setting as well.

The arguments for/against Galaxy are irrelevant. Installing software without the user's permission or knowledge is a sleazy business tactic, no matter how useful the software is. And just to be absolutely clear: I use the client a lot, and do not hate it; quite the opposite; I just find it devoid of features at the time, but that is irrelevant. What I am trying to say is: an already complicated piece of software like a game should NOT be dependent on another piece of software, or somehow bundled with it, especially a proprietary or closed one. That is a very, very disrespectful attitude that makes a lot of people hate Steam, and not a very elegant kind of software solution that only adds a possible or actual layer of complexity.

I think a better thing would be not including the client with the downloads, or have the games and the client be fully independent. What I mean is this: I recently installed Jade Empire, and it seems to have automatically "contacted" the client, and added itself to the list of installed games. I am not sure how this is done, so I might be woefully wrong here. But I don't think this is such a good thing to do, because, for instance, there is no Linux version of GOG Galaxy: and whenever I run a game through Wine (and this is one of the main reasons I joined <a href="http://GOG.com:" class="light_un" target="_blank">GOG.com:</a> in order to be able to have standalone, offline installers I could run through it), the installation process almost hangs or crashes, probably because there is a Windows-specific call used to interact with the client, or check if it is already installed. And please note that I usually only run those games that are KNOWN to work WELL with Wine.

I just wanted to open a thread but was happy to find this. A little time ago I noticed that there was a new default "Galaxy Installers" vs. "Classic Installers". WTF?! I do not want Galaxy. I do not want to be force-fed some client software upon me. I want it the old way. Buy. Download. Install. Have fun. <br /> I had downloaded 8 GB already through a rather narrow connection until I noticed this (g) in the filenames... aaarrrgh! <br /> <br /> Besides: Galaxy does not work on Linux and I do use Linux 95% of the day. I try to avoid rebooting to Windows for games, where possible, but even then, I do not want some client software forced upon me. <br /> <br /> So GOG please stop this shit! <br /> People that do use Galaxy will very likely not need "galaxy installers" because they download the whole thing with Galaxy anyway. I am terminally sure your Galaxy API features some bits to check for newly acquired games and can download them. So there is no need for "galaxy installers".

As a customer who apparently had been buying only the 'right' games up until now I only really grasped the core of this problem upon receiving 'Tales from the Borderlands' as a bonus for buying a bunch of cheap games I felt vaguely nostalgic about. You see, for me all of my games came in the form of what GOG likes to call the "CLASSIC GAME INSTALLERS" (mind the allcaps, folks...) which install the following components: The game you've bought. Congratulations GOG! That's exactly what we wanted. Good job. <br /> <br /> But if a customer makes the mistake of purchasing 'wrong' games, their installer-selection defaults to the 'wrong' installer. In detail that means they have to notice this before downloading the majority of a 9.7 GB installation, delete all those filthy, Galaxy infested files, select the classic installer and start again. <br /> <br /> However, I do believe GOG is just 'misguided' in this matter. Listen, GOG: We don't need you to bring up that we have a choice by secretly slipping that installer into our pockets like Ronald McDonald showing up at a vegan brunch, handing out coupons for his newest, meatiest hamburger. "We'd rather not have it. Thank you. Now go home to your wife and kids. They miss you. And take those bloody coupons with you. If we ever 'do' want to try Galaxy, all we need to do is to click that big blue button that you display over every. Single. Game! Goodbye."

@CelineSSauve - defaulting to galaxy installers and hiding direct installers is certainly a very underhanded thing to do, but *protesting* by buying from Steam is just supporting a client that is mandatory. I would at least first check if Humble Store has a DRM-free download (not just a Steam code) of the game you are looking for.

Just to clarify something for the readers, the next comment says Galaxy doesn't have a "minimize to tray"-option. <br /> No, because that is default. Hit the X and Galaxy minimizes to tray.

I'm new to GOG and Galaxy having just purchased my first game from here. I'm glad I read this post because I echo everything others have said and am now convinced that I want to download my games using JDownloader instead of Galaxy. <br /> <br /> Given that download times are so long it is clear that the best time to download is while sleeping. In my case my bandwidth is limited unless I download between 11pm and 7am but Galaxy provides no such option. Heck, it doesn't even have a minimize to systray option!

I agree with all these comments but no one has said how long it takes to download a a game they have bought from GOG. My last 2 games I have bought have taken more than 24 hours just to download non stop. Ihave complained about this and been asked what downloader I was using.?? this is bying from GOG there isn`t an alterative. If so many people are loged into GOG this could be the reason for the slowness. my speeds down loading dispite being on BT fastest has been .6MB/s to the fastest 2MB/s and the fastesst is for a couple of seconds only.

By not updating and maintaining the OLD DOWN LOADER, GOG is, in their own way, slowly FORCING it's supporters to ultimately use GALAXY. <br /> <br /> Sooner or later the old down loader will no longer function properly leaving ONLY....... GALAXY. <br /> <br /> I don't appreciate this one bit. As another writer posted, once you start, it's a slippery slope..... straight downhill. And, I see hints of changes within GOG's initial promise to us that don't bode well. <br /> <br /> But the name of the game is..... MONEY. And GALAXY is that for GOG. <br /> <br /> I don't play on line. Don't want GALAXY shoved down my throat (or computer) and feel GOG should maintain the old down loader for those who DON'T need.... NEW and IMPROVED every two minutes.

Once you start down the path of bundling adware/malware/unwanted programs, GOG, you are going to have a hard time recovering from that reputation. I was actually using/enjoying Galaxy prior to this, but I'm uninstalling it now and I had to redownload about 10 games that I had downloaded the WRONG (Galaxy bundled) installer for, not knowing about the change. My hard drive space is valuable, I don't have room for your redundant junk.

I completely agree with the other posters. Not having a client being forced on me is the main reason I'm using GOG at all. I can't be the only one who hates having to laboriously opt-out of stuff he didn't sign up for in the first place.

@Destro and other GOG staff; <br /> Installing GOG Galaxy is something that should not be a defaulted-on option. Making it available is one thing, but including it and installing it by default is unacceptable. Most of the GOG customer base comes here for not just for the DRM-free standard, but most of us do not and will not play online. Nor to we want a yet another program running when we start-up our systems. It's the wrong move especially given the spirit of ideals GOG was founded on.

I understand that gog is trying to establish itself as an alternative to steam but right now its looking as if this service is turning into a second steam client. The only reason i use gog is the fact that it is not steam and does not require a client. If this changes, why should anyone stay on gog and not simply switch to steam ?

Last time I checked "Optional" didn't mean "Default", not only that but the description only changes one word when you click on classic installer. It still mentions galaxy whether you've selected that version or not. I shouldn't have to be eagle-eyed and cautious when looking at my own game library.

You all DO realize you can just click on the "more" option and chose "classic installer" for games that are by default set to Galaxy installers, right? Therefore GOG Galaxy is NOT enforced on you. <br /> An example is Darkest Dungeon. <br />

How is forcing us to install GOG Galaxy during a game install DRM free. Making me uninstall the GOG utility every time will stop me from buying games from your sight. I came here for my game collection not Steam for that reason. We should have the choice you sold us that it is our software to own. If you play like Steam people will go to Steam to get there games not GOG.

Exactly, don't turn into a DRM-first website. That's not why people buy on GOG. It's because the players get to choose, I myself am turning away from Steam because it's so anoying to have yet another program installed, it's another layer and I just want my games to be a clean install, no whistles and bells.

OK so apparently most (all?) games with this bundling have non-Galaxy install versions. <br /> <br /> The question is WHY? Apart from pissing off customers (not only those that don't want it, but those that don't want to download the same crap added to every game!), from a software development & support standpoint it's seriously moronic. Unless someone is going to tell me that re-bundling every game in the catalog every time a new version of Galaxy comes out is somehow better than just having a stand-alone Galaxy install and a stand-alone game install? <br /> <br /> FFS, just stick a library or two into each game download - which handles all the Galaxy-to-game communication - and get the game to look for Galaxy. If it's there, use it. If it's not, then ignore it! <br /> <br /> It's really not that difficult, and you'd think that people who can get old games to work on new systems (which GOG does a pretty damn good job at), would be aware of basic software development principles such as code modularity...

I've noticed a few of my games now seem to come with Galaxy by default - it's a pain to uninstall it every time (I don't use it at all). The whole point of standalone install files is for people to avoid having to use Galaxy. Forcing it on us negates the good feeling GOG normally generates in fans. Please remove Galaxy from the standalone installs.
