Shadowrun Returns completed
Personally, I prefered the Mega Drive version over the SNES one, because of former's being much truer to the pen-and-paper roots and having more freedom.
Good to see Shadowrun Returns referencing them both (and now on GOG!) :)
The SNES game had the better story over the Genesis game in my opinion. Plus it's what turned me on to Shadowrun.
So far the only shadowrun I've played that I've considered good and follows most of the core rules from the books is the one from sega genesis; The SNES version was ranged/guns only and felt kinda dumb with it's animations. Since Microsoft bought the company and rights the series seems to have basically died.
I actually tried logging on to Steam today to buy this, and had to sit through a long update for the damned thing (god I hate Steam). It's extracting the package as I type this. Bored of waiting for it to update, I went Googling and discovered it's coming to GOG! Hell yes! Another reason never to use this godawful Steam garbage. And to think, I was saved by the fact that Steam was taking so long to update itself. HELL'S YES! Let the demise of Steam start with GOG. Shadowrun Returns is an instant purchase once it's up.
Great news. :) I'll buy it as soon as it is available.
I bought this game from Steam but I really want it DRM-free and I will buy it again .
OK, it has to be here. Everybody should support this "Request" and buy SR as a symbol...
This is the latest update from kickstarter:
Hey Everyone!
We just want to send out a quick update to share some good news. Thanks to a new agreement we were able to negotiate with our partners at Microsoft, Harebrained Schemes is pleased to announce that we are now able to release fully DRM-free versions of Shadowrun Returns and future expansions such as Berlin.
The DRM-free versions of SRR and Berlin will continue to be fully supported. You'll be able to download all game patches, use the Shadowrun Returns editor and experience user-generated content downloaded from third-party sites such as Nexus.
We’re starting work to get Shadowrun Returns available on GOG.com right now - not sure how long that will take but we’ll let you know as soon as we have an answer.
We’re very excited we’re finally able to offer Shadowrun DRM-free to everyone and look forward to making it available!
Take care,
HBS
What TMZuk said. Every single word.
Yes, I'd love to buy it, but not from Steam. I had steam on my PC once and never again!
Loved the game. Loving the UGC that's releasing for it. Steam isn't the optimal platform but it is convenient.

If you liked the SNES/Megadrive game, you're not going to like this a lot.
The campaign is short and the engine is clunky. The editor is hard to figure out and very moody. (I've heard a friend say he had to put down FLOORS first, of all things.)
If you need to point to DLC to make a game more complete, you're doing it wrong.
well. could be a good idea.. but I already supported the kickstart...
It's not as fun or addict as the first version, on SNES, but welll..
not a bad A RPG ....
Huh. People seem really sore about the save system (which does nothing more than add a little consequence to your actions, forcing you to go back 15 minutes or so if you do something silly and get yourself killed). I loved the game. The campaign is not all that short, though it is very linear (much like most Pen and Paper campaigns would be?), and the potential for more (also probably linear) community built campaigns is quite promising.
As for "designed for a tablet," I had no idea they intended a tablet release until after I finished the game. The interface was fine, if admittedly slightly clunky at times.
This is no Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate. It's a different style of game. Personally, I'd buy it again on GOG if it showed up, despite having also bought it on steam.
Terribly disappointing game. The one kickstarter I wish, in retrospect, I hadn't backed.
GoG is not missing anything by not being able to include it in it's catalogue.
I've got access to a DRM free copy because I backed the kickstarter. It will probably just sit in my account though because I actually like Steam. It's a fun game but rather short. I'm on my 4th playthrough. If Steam has a sale, and you're not a Steam hater, I recommend getting it.
I'd prefer buy this game here rather than 'the other' store that we know...
Microsoft still owns the rights to the Shadowrun IP, so Harebrained were on contract to include some kind of DRM in this game.
Fear not, for all you are missing out on is a completely linear campaign with passable gameplay, marred by a clunky interface that was obviously designed for tablets and an even worse save system. Here's hoping Wasteland 2 or Project Eternity will be the return of the classic computer RPG we've all dreamed of.
I bought the game on Steam this summer, I have begun with the first mission and was able to get through it until now (tbh: only on easy, but will replay on normal and perhaps also try on difficult, with changing mainchars of course). I am actually playing a streetsamurai, but will for sure also try every other class). I never played the p&p, but have read some novels and the atmosphere in the game suits really the atmosphere of the novels. I really like this dark future scenario, which was high in the eighties and ended only after Judgment-Day. It's somewhat nostalgic, but personally I really feel some kind of synchronity with the actual developements. But generally it simply makes alot fun, playing this kind of streetguy in a darf future like Shadowrun and the Johnny Mnemonic and Bladerunner worlds. I wrote a recommendation on Steam and even if it is turnbased, which I don't like over all, it makes really a lot of fun.
I am especially looking forward to play Shamans, Riggers and Deckers.
If I will find the courage, I even would like to write an own story, if this is possible with the editor and doesn't need programming knowldedge. I have to find those old Shadowrun-Novels to read in better. But this kind of setup would really be fun to create stories.
They wont be puting a drm free copy for sale anytime soon
I was kickstarter who got box copy for $125 and only drm free copy you can ever get is sadly far anytime will be kickstarter after it ending and months passed they sadly told us the horrored news that later add ons wont work with the DRM free copy we will still be geting
While they gave everone steam keys to make up for this disapointing move on there kickstarters who whated help the "small man" and help "drm free" movement they stabed us in the back
And like Fenrir007 I will be more iffy to help a kickstarter waveing the "DRM FREE COMYS COME AND HELP US" flags its vary sad I really wanted to help and get great copy of the game but now feels like I payed $125 for outdated and over priced copy of Borderlands with out all the dlc on the disc
Due what they did it would be vary long time before DRM free copy came out of Returns for non kickstarters and any add ons they do
Bad? The game is great. Finally something that didn't suck like the newest premium AAA releases. It's core campaign is a bit short, but next one, Berlin mission is announced, plus already few more on workshop popped up (at production stage though). Generally, I love the way the game is right now, but I'm just waiting for new contant atm.
I wasn't aware people didn't like the new Shadowrun game. I found it to be very enjoyable and well made... also, i view it in a similar manner to Neverwinter Nights. No way do I consider this tiny installment to be the entirety of the game. I'm waiting for expansions, additional campaigns and more complexity to the character building. This game still has so much potential.
Is the game really that bad?
I played this on SNES and loved it and like a lot of you i really wish it would be available on GOG too.
I signed up to Steam to get this. I do wish I could have got it from GOG. I'm glad to have the game, but it is about 15 years + behind PC - gaming and definately designed for a tablet or a 1990's game console - except it doesn't have the creativity games had back then (no free roaming).
Steam as a dsitribution service also sucks. I'd like to take it of my PC, but if I do I can't play srun and its promising user generated content.
Go GOG, if you can make SRUN DRM-free for us.
Please god NO. This is not a real PC title... made for tablets. Yuck.
Gladly will buy from GOG, because of it´s values. No need to say more.
Well, you are looking at it from a wrong perspective:
Of couse the game got its failures---but that´s not the main problem.
The main problem is that it´s not here and a crowd-funded, steam-exlusive game is just not the right way!
Don't fret too much about it...
And , it's finally not so great, with the worse autosave feature ever seen on an turn-by-turn rpg... Checkpoint at the beginning of a map : not before battle, not even on quitting...
Just this poor feature will limit the capacity of the modders to do anything great.
The game is ultralinear, no impact for the dialog apart in the current map, and so on...
Really a shame, because, even if the campaign is not so great, the UCGH will be impaired by the lack of local savestates...
How to ruin a great game with a poor excuse : we have no money (they were overfunded by 1,4m $ on kickstarter)...
JPR out!
It would be great if it were available here.
I do not hate steam and all that, but I prefer games without DRM, obviously. I just do not like the idea that a crowd funded game becomes a Steam exclusive, DRM containing game, however. That's just wrong.
I would really like to play this but I hate Steam and it's DRM.
I would vote for this feature but it wouldn't do much. Shadowrun Returns and HBS have to have some form of DRM for the version they are selling. It was part of the License from Microsoft (Who own's the rights to the Shadowrun video games.) So while I'd love to see it on here, unless people can convince MICROSOFT to let them go DRM-Free you're voting against a wall. Unless GOG can strike a deal with Microsoft and then HBS.
Need without the steam BS
I helped fund this game on the basis that it would be DRM free, let others purchase it without DRM.
Would buy from GOG; not really interested in steam DRM.
well I would have probably bought this without the lack of standards (no-DRM) but now that I don't have to buy it, there's a good Bruce Sterling scifi waiting for me. So why worry. I can wait another decade for some scifi game to be released by people who are not mad :)
Surely the people aggravated by the lack of DRM-free version (this includes me since I missed the kickstarter) understand that the licensing of the game includes licenses and contracts with the copyright owners of the Shadowrun RPG system and franchise, and they also have saying in the selling policy of the game. It's not completely up to the developers. I can tolerate Steam-DRM if there is no recent chance of getting it DRM-free.
Seems like backers get a drm free download but for anyone who had no clue that there even was a thing called kickstarter when this game was up get shafted. Thumbs up for treating their fans right but sadly I am not touching steam.
The game developers have said that their copyright license mandates they have DRM so there's no chance to get this on GOG unfortunately.
People donate for this game and they place DRM on it? what a joke!
I want this, I want it DRM-free, and I'm not using Steam. Surely the companies must realise that everyone who wants this, and is wanting it DRM-free, will just get it some "other" way - a way which will involve ZERO MONEY to the developers/producers/etc?
You'd think that the success of sites like GOG would wake people up. Then again, it took a while to convince others that the Earth wasn't flat, so there will always be some "slow" people in society...
Anyone have any suggestions on a good Shadowrun game to play? Thanks!
I don't mind steam for TF2. Other than that, I don't support their model, or microcrap. So no Shadowrun Returns vote from me! Besides, did anyone here see the crap version that microbialcrap put out a few years back. Horrid!
looks very intriguing, but I don't want it on st3@m! (have to censor bad language ;)
Heard the news today. I just wish the game was widely available. It looks great.
LOL! I doubt that would happen with Microshaft involved.
But to those that have demanded a refund from HBS and got it: Well done there for standing by your principles :)
