1. Less brittle: /Users/Shared is more open to users (e.g. my kids) going around and breaking things than /Library (and I don't care what other users do in their ~/Library).

2. Better leverage of OS X: for example, Console.app will read log files under /Library/Logs and ~/Library/Logs; log files elsewhere have to be manually opened which is more painful.

3. Less info leakage: /Library and ~/Library are less visible, meaning less info about my account can be accessed by other users (you may even want to avoid using /Library at all and use only ~/Library to eliminate this altogether).
