I have to admit from the beginning that I am completely biased. I have played every single title in the storied Heroes series (including Chronicles and the poorly executed VII). Never finished I, II, or VII. I have completed III, IV, V, and VI. While III is generally considered the quentissential volume, I argue that V is better for the reason that it has an actual story line that is carried through all the scenarios. Whereas with III, the end of each scenario is the end of that story line. That's why they were able to take III and make Chronicles. 10 scenarios with the same characters that have nothing to do with each other. You still get the goodness of the building (added to), and the battles...and in the latter stages, they can become epic. If you've never played (hard to imagine) one of these titles, I'd say this is the one to begin with. If you like it, then try III. I'd say steer clear of VI. The story is kind of trite. The battles and building are still good, however.

Wow! Where to begin!? 1st! Bought this on Steam (better sale price-sorry). It's been on my 'wishlist' at both sites for well over six months. Strategy game with RPG elements. Oh boy! HOMM1-6...but VIKINGS! What could go wrong? Well...took three tries for the game to launch properly (various memory/video glitches). And when it did launch, because of the single camera view, there were quests and loot I couldn't reach. If you're going to have a side scrolling game you can't put items on top of each other...especially if one of them is a cage that is persistent. This game was such a hot mess, I requested (and got) a refund. NEVER asked for a refund before. Even from games I hated!!! To earn it's one star-the graphics are beautiful.

I admit it! I'm an HOMM fanatic. Have played all 6. Have 4 of them on this monster machine ((III-VI) 6core AMD processor, 12G mem., GTX 660 video w/2G). This is a very good clone of that franchise! Good turn-based combat and colorful graphics. The story's decent. Not great...but enough fun that I've played through twice already! Because of the backtracking, prepare to spend about 40 hours with the game. Not bad when you get on sale on GOG.
