I already own all three games, but I admit I've never played further than NWN's 2nd chapter of the campaign. Take my review with a pinch of salt, because this will be focused on the multiplayer, which in and of itself, priced at $9.99, deserves every one of the five stars I'm giving it. The singleplayer campaign, to elaborate what was said above, isn't very good. Actually, it's sub-par compared to many RPGs. The pacing is alright, but the writing leaves much to be desired, and there's no attempt by Bioware to draw emotional empathy between the player and the NPCs, at least from what I experienced from the prelude to Chapter 2. To put it bluntly, NWN's default singleplayer is mediocre. Now that we've settled that, let's move on to multiplayer. I'll start by introducing "modules" first. Modules are user-created levels, and these range from new maps to the complete revamping of gameplay (Total Conversions). Now there is a huge selection of modules that you can play online with. There is such a wide abundance of servers (or at least there used to be, I don't know if there still are), and usually each server runs a different module. Multiplayer modules range from servers that adopt aRPG leveling rules (powerleveling), to persistent worlds where players actually take roleplaying to a whole new level. If you get bored of a server, you can simply move on to another one. As mentioned, every server is usually unique to itself. There are servers that adopt the same module, but they usually branch out with their own rules. Some focus more on crafting, and if I recall correctly, a few actually have castle sieges. There's even a modern themed pack of assets for Dungeon Masters and mod-makers. Really, the sky's the limit here, the choices almost bewildering in fact. If multiplayer's not your cup of tea, I hear Hordes of the Underdark has a decent campaign. And when you're done with that, IGN's NWNVault is home to many great mods. NWN, as a game out of the box, is far from perfect, but what the community has done with it makes it a must-buy for any RPG fan.
