Lords of the Fallen Game of the Year Edition 2014

A decent Souls-like oldie.

This is one of the first games that tried to copy the fundamental systems of the DS games, while adding enough to make the world make sense. It's fun to kill demons, it's fun to try out new weapons, and the way your XP multiplier increases the longer you go without dying or "resting at a campfire" is great. It's not a very difficult game, but I will say that some enemies are just so much easier to deal with when using certain weapons, that it kinda makes it impossible to not switch weapons often. Like, good luck trying to take down a guy in full-plate with a tower shield bigger than his body with a dagger. The bosses aren't that difficult, but for someone who played 90% of the game wearing light armor, I switched to heavy for the last part of the game and found it much better versus bosses. There are annoying enemies, and the few sections that require you to jump are the worst part of the game, the fact that the characters roll forward after landing is maddening! I died so many times that way, it's crazy. Hell, I died more trying to reach some loot on a tiny platform than I did on the last boss... All in all, a decent, slower-paced title for those who enjoy this type of games, and worth picking up on a discount.

Thymesia

For extreme fans of the genre only.

This is not a game that allows you to play your way. There is almost no customization, no gear, and the worst of all, no weapons. All you have is 2 daggers and some weapon skills with variable costs and cooldowns. You won't be getting away with using some bow or magic or OP weapon to cheese some bosses, or farm enough to overpower a certain challenge. The game tries to keep you as underpowered as possible against these bosses, and it wants you to be a master of timing your parries. While you can probably beat the game by only dodging (I got to the last boss like that), it's not the intended way to play. The enemies are mostly fine, and the levels are what you'd expect from this type of games, but compared to some other Soulslike games, it offers too little in the "play your way" category to be worth picking up, even when heavily discounted.

Echoes of the End: Enhanced Edition

A decent puzzle-platformer.

Contrary to what the trailers show, this is a game centered around puzzles and platforming, with an actually decent combat system that doesn't get much use. It's also a very linear game, with 1 path to follow that sometimes splits into 2, one of which leads to a treasure chest or some currency. The puzzles vary from interesting and fun to complete to really annoying, but you won't need to google the answer more than maybe once or twice. It's not a very long game, which is good, because by the end the developers started to get a bit too creative with the tools needed to complete said puzzles. Using 2-3 systems to beat a puzzle is enough, any more seems excessive. It's an interesting title, but I can't stress enough that this ISN'T a typical action-adventure game, so don't expect to be getting into fights too often, especially not against many enemies at once!

The Surge 2

A brutal game!

You get loot by cutting people's limbs, decapitating them or splitting 'em in half... that's awesome! There are sooo many weapons, but there are basically 9 weapon classes, so a spear and a longer spear are going to be doing the same attacks, with only the stats being different. Still, 9 is quite a lot. It has an interesting system where the more you cut people, the more xp you get, but the bonus resets when you visit "the bonfire" (medbay), I think that's a great idea, but the maps are too large and maze-like with too few enemies to make it work as well at it could have. The bosses are either "Did I just kill it on the first try?" or "OK, type to Google this, I'm done, dying 10 times is enough!", depending on your gear... like, I had major issues versus a midgame boss, but absolutely wrecked the final one... just because I was using a build that sucks at dealing with bosses who run around all the time and kick you away. All in all, a very good game, and totally worth getting on a sale! Oh, yeah, there's also a story somewhere, but who cares about that?

Steelrising

A very competent souls-like.

It took me 29 hours to beat (excluding AFK time, probably 26 or so). It's not the most difficult game, but it's not a total cakewalk either, like some reviewers would want you to think. There's not much there in the way of customizing your character, no talent points, just skill point that increase your stats, and the gear itself - other than the weapons and some sort of "jewels" with a few interesting effects, there's not much to do to make a build that you like. It's a bit annoying how there's no minimap, so you have to remember where to go, and even a compass that marks the spot in the world and tells you how far away you are from it won't help you much in the more maze-like zones. Some of the enemies are quite dangerous, and some of the minibosses and bosses are as well, but with the clever use of potions, you can make short work of them, while buffing your survivability. Maybe not worth picking at full price, but with how deeply discounted this gets, it's totally worth the asking price!

Dragon Ruins II

A nice sequel.

Look, if you liked the first one, this is pretty much more of the same - with more bells and whistles. They added way more enemies, and they scale with you, so no matter what you're doing, you're always going to be in danger - unless you outscale them at some point. I picked an all-girls party this time, and that made the game harder than it should've been, but not impossible. I played cautiously, and managed to finish it without a full wipe, which felt good! Unfortunately, it's a very niche title, just like the first one, even more grindy, so unless you're into lots of that, you should probably steer clear. But if you don't mind it - or, god forbid, love it - this is a no-brainer, especially if you get it on a discount.

Dragon Ruins

Just lacking some QoL stuff.

The game's fun, I'm probably halfway through, but I've seen enough to tell that with just a few changes it could've been a must-play for dungeon crawler fans. The fact that you can't tell how long you have left until enemies respawn is probably my biggest issue with the game, but the classes being just stat sticks, with no skills or talents or anything to define them is also a pretty weird choice. Overall, if you can get it on sale, it's a good purchase!
