Surviving Mars is a good game. How good? I picked it up for free on Epic Games, played it for over 100 hours, and turned around to buy it on GOG to make sure I'd have it forever with DLC--and I fully expect to put dozens more hours into it over the coming years. Surviving Mars is a detailed, complex, and ultimately very pretty colony building game. There are references to both science fiction and science fact throughout. Nearly the entire Martian surface is viable for the player to attempt to colonize. As each location has different parameters, the replayability of the game is significant. I can't speak to realism but a great deal of thought, work and talent are evident in the execution of this game. That said, it can be very slow, especially depending on the starting parameters and player inexperience. However if you want a Colony Builder for Mars, this game is more than worth a try.
