Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft

That game could have been an email...

Well, to be honest this is not a game, this is a slideshow of barely animated pictures., on which you need to click from time to time to get to the next scene. It is an adaptation of a short story Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft, fully voiced, neither very good nor very bad. Music ambience fits the narrative, the voice actor is good, the animated backgrounds are uneven - the exteriors look decent, but the interiors are below the expectations. In the "game" the player has very limited freedom of movement, and everything seems to be prerendered, but framerate is nevertheless bad and camera move is sluggish and jerky. This whole thing takes about an hour to go thru. If this type of horror is your thing the experience is ok, at least it gets the story right. It's free on GOG and at this price - give it a try, just don't expect to much.

Project Pastorate

It's not a game...

This is an barely interactive, barely animated graphic novel (more of a novella tbh). There is not much of a game really, from time to time a fight happens and you win it by needlessly convoluted rock-paper-scissors style card game, which by the way you may skip and auto-win if that's not your cup of tea. The world building is nothing special, the characters obvious, the whole plot unoriginal but it has some tension and flavor of a cop drama, which is nice. Drawings are okey, some of the dialogues are witty, music doesn't hurt the ears. If you are into graphic novels maybe you'll like it - you don't riks much as even the original price without any promotions is less than a decent cup of coffee.

Fates of Ort

not great, not terrible

The game is fun and somewhat original, but also repetitive and not very challenging. You travel a pixelated isometric environment depicting kind of science-fantasy kingdom, you cast spells that cost you hp (or not, depending on one), you work your way thru different areas in rouge-like fashion and you decide what new spell to choose with each level. It's kind of charming, but sadly the charm washes off few hours into the game. Quests are easy, storyline and NPCs are ok, but again - nothing special. Fun game for few evenings if you bought it discounted.

The Blind Prophet

Looks great, sounds great, plays ok

Visually this is a very interesting game, or rather an interactive comic. It looks spectacular and has it's own style. Locations are flawlessly drawn, they fit the story well. Sound design is also top notch, with droning music and single words that are spoken - that all works great with the visiual side of things adding dynamic to otherwise rather static scenes. When it comes to gamplay - let's face it there is not much gamplay. Puzzles are easy and often unoriginal, combining items is always obvious, nothing is really timed, it's hard to get stuck. Story - well - the story... Let's put it that way: it's enjoyable while you play, when it tries to be funny it usually is, when it tries to be deep (especially in the very end) it is obvious and unconvincing. I don't mind games that aren't deep - I would appreeciate this one more if it wouldnt try so god damned (pun intended) hard. Overall - pleasant, visually impressive and fun if interactive graphic novels are your thing. It took me 6h40m to beat the game which is ok for the price.

Richard & Alice

For you if sad is your thing.

The story is sad and unpleasant, if you don't mind the game being just a pretext to tell the tale it may be a thing for you. Although there is a slight plot twist at one point it's hard not to guess it much before it happens. But that is ok, because the focus of the story is on morality, so it is more important how the action is being justified then what exactly is being done. Puzzels are usually easy but require some tedious bactracking. Game is short - it took me 3h without using any walkthroughs or guides. When I ended playing I was a bit shaken and this is not a common thing with me. I woudln't say that I liked the experience, but it was definitelly worth time and money. If you liked (from a lack of a better word) Cormac McCathy's The Road you will probably like the story told in Richard and Alice.
