I'll let you judge. From the description of skills in the game: "CANCEL - We've learned how to CANCEL someone. CANCEL will allow us to isolate people from their friends and compatriots. In battle, this could be a useful tool against enemies." "BULLY - We've learned to BULLY people. BULLY gives us the power to force people to do something they may not want to do, or to make them feel bad about themselves. In fights this could be highly effective on the targeted enemies." "NORMALIZE - We've learned how to NORMALIZE negative emotions. NORMALIZE gives us the ability to make people think certain behaviors or feelings are normal...but I'm not sure it will do much for us in a fight."

This is probably high level nitpicking, so take it with a grain of salt. The game itself seems to be quite nice from what I have seen so far. But honestly, the magic system is frustrating for me. I'm always trying to RPG play an ice/water mage in the Age of Wonder series, combined with Vikings/Elves adapted to arctic environment. Think of Frozen, Queen Elsa, Marshmallow etc. Somehow, if I want to play an ice mage, I'm lumped with shadow magic and raising undead. That's... not the RPG theme I want to play as at all. I'm a bit thorn between giving the game a 3 or a 4. It seems nice & the magic system is something different than the usual "elemental" magics. But I'll probably have to play a completely different faction than I intended.

Just played a custom mage for a bit, alchemist mentalist and explored the map. The game is single player/story driven and revolves around uncovering magical secrets and growing your power. It's mostly HoMM style running around with heroes to do quests and gather resources. You also build your tower to become more powerful. At first I was a bit confused because you don't build or conquer cities. You only meld with nodes (similar to master of magic) and grow the influence of your tower. I have to admit that the resource gathering is a bit cumbersome. I prefer managing cities. But you can auto resolve most battles, so the game flow is ok, I guess. Little tip: Splitting stacks of units is done by clicking on the boot/movement symbol below the units. Took me ages to find that out because I always ignore the tutorial messages ^^ The graphics are very nice and the battles/magic fun. The UI interface is much better than in the Master of Magic remake. But I like the city/empire building there more than the single tower I have here. I will have to play a bit more to see whether the story is the same/still motivating to do a second or third playthrough.

Old Master of magic fan here ^^ The remake has really nice graphics & the rules are mostly the same as the original. You can still freely create your own wizard, combining books of various fields of magic and specific traits. There is also a plethora of staple races to choose from: barbarians, trolls, draconians, elves, halflings, klackon etc. However, there are also some subtle changes: Hex instead of square fields, including combat, is the most obvious one. This will undoubtly influence balancing, but I didn't delve deeply enough into the game yet to say how much. Remaking a game 1:1 of course has advantages and disadvantages. The original game *was* unbalanced and there *are* OP combinations of units or traits. But playing with them is fun. My only gripe is that multiplayer is missing. Since I'm not very happy with the current installments of civilization, master of magic could be an alternative if a DLC or addon would offer a multiplayer mode.

Old world is a nice civilization alternative & I'll always talk favorably about those ^^ It has an interesting economy, which is a bit hard to get into & more complex than civ. However, for me the number of families and characters you need to keep track of are really a problem. You don't just have to manage the ruling family but also several minor dynasties inside your kingdom and potential intermarriages with other civilizations. Usually, I like to "roleplay" a civ - play a warrior civ, a scientific civ etc. Having a family to manage and raising your children as mighty warriors or great scholars would usually work really well with this. But right now, having soo many characters is just getting too much. There is an option to switch family management off altogether but this also kills all kinds of quests and roleplay. Maybe Mohawk/someone else will add an option to manage just 1 family/the ruling family.
