A fantastic adventure with a dark adult story. One of the best point-and-clicks since Monkey Island & Inherit the Earth. Just be sure to select "modern mode" right at the start! This eliminates the annoying pixel hunting without making the game too easy. Time-critical tasks are also simplified. Does this make the game too easy? No, the negative points of criticism are completely eliminated. Only items that are difficult to see are highlighted after some time. This needs to be said again clearly: The game offers you to choose the mode between Modern and Classic. That alone is a major advantage. You decide how much help you want. I would also like to praise the voice acting in both the English and German versions. Riddles can also usually be solved logically. Just be warned, it's a dark story!
I still know the original from back then. The game has been well adapted to today's hardware and remains true to the original. You immediately feel reminded of games like star fox. The game finds its own way, which must be clearly emphasized. Gampad is also very well supported, that should at least be mentioned. No need to fiddle around in the options. The graphics have also been beautifully enhanced, without overdoing it. Even if the game is really short, I miss a save function. Sure, the original didn't have it either, but that really wouldn't be too much to ask for an remake. Each of us knows situations in which you want to interrupt the game without losing the complete progress. It's really good for what it is. Unfortunately, I can only give the game 3 stars, considering the point of view from which I came. Often I don't have the time to play through a game in one go. If that's not a problem for you, feel free to give my review more stars. Three stars are fine, above average, but there is definitely potential wasted. Especially when you consider what it normally costs to buy this game. Buy it on sale, you will not go wrong, but not for the original price.
A great beginning, a strong middle phase and a significant decrease at the end. To make a long story short, yes you can play your character the way you want. There are so many possibilities. So many options for solutions, but they all have one problem: It too often ends in the same result. The further the game progresses, the less meaningful your character becomes. Some skills are only used once or twice, but of course you don't know that beforehand. At the beginning, you can solve riddles in so many ways: Talking to the dead, analyze artworks, even talking to your tie, assuming a sick mind. Only to throw almost everything overboard towards the end and limit it to a few skills in a lack of meaning. Another warning to all whose native language is not English: Difficult dialect is spoken, mixed with French influences. The subtitles help, but since the story consists of extremely abstract thoughts, it requires constant full attention all the time. My recommendation: Buy at Sale. Expect more of an heavy story adventure than a roleplay. Great potential that runs out of steam in the end to keep the story train running.
Many things have already been written about it, so I will limit myself to the conclusion: The mood misses its target. The environment is much too bright. Everything looks friendly and not like a abandoned island. In the original certain passages were rather threatening. This was mainly achieved through the light and sound, but also hidden hints of torture devices, cells and other strange constructions. The story is dark in essence and about the plundering of other civilizations. Yes, the story is really dark, where is that reflected in the remake? The dark rooms are now as bright as day. Dynamic light does not exist at all or it is not noticeable, even with the highest settings. I don't know what was the goal. Many sounds that ranged from meschanic to depressing were removed. I better not even start to talk abaout the cartoon characters... The other problems have already been addressed, but for me it was the lack of amtosphere that killed the game for me. The game should not be called Remake, but "Happy Island". I do not advise against buying, but don't expect the dirty, gritty experience of metal, machines and strange devices. You get a nice sunny day. If you like that, buy it. *For comparison I have also installed and tested the original version again
