Hand of Fate

Roguelite Cardbuilder Hidden Gem

This game combines multiple genres into one. Cardbuilding, CCG, RPG, roguelite, action combat, light story telling/story generating. Some concepts are very well executed while some other needs improvements. The cardbuilding/CCG aspect is very well executed and it's definitely the strongest point. There are a few types of card: equipment, monsters/boss, and random encounter. Equipment and monsters are quite self explanatory, which gives an average RPG/roguelite experience. But the encounter/event cards are what makes this game unique. Each card, or series of card, is a story. You could follow a series of card to complete a side quest. The card dealer is comparable to a dungeon master that tells you the story when you select a card. There's a huge amount of encounter cards; it's worth discovering and play them. Every run feels unique since there's an even bigger amount of combination of cards. But it does feel repetitve at times due to the combat system which everyone complains. The graphic/art direction is another strong point. Despite being almost 10 years old, it still looks great and plays well on modern spec system. The weaker side is the action combat part. The engine shows its age and combat feels like button smashing + QTE. I took a star off from the overall score because combat is only around 30% of the game. While boss fight combats are unavoidable, it is not a game with huge emphasis on combat.
