Lords of the Fallen Game of the Year Edition 2014

meh

I tried it years ago and gave up after 50 minutes for some reason. Came back and remembered why. No minimap, feels really 'console-porty', combat animations are really jarring and ruins immersion; I tried all the weapon archetypes and none of them seem smooth, almost like im not even in the same game as the mobs. It's not for me, others seem to like it, but it never grabbed me enough to make it out of the first tutorial mission.

Chronicon Complete

Absolutely Amazing

Sure, the GFX look like they come from some time between SNES and N64, but you will very quickly forget to notice once you get into it. This game is what torchlight wishes it were, and I quite enjoyed that franchise. Addicting gameplay, tons of skill combos, plenty of gear, and you can respec pretty much whenever you want for no cost. Multiple skills on a single key-bind make for some stupid powerful builds without the need to macro or micromanage timers. Absolutely worth it at full price, it's a steal at any discount.

Solasta: Crown of the Magister

Good for its state but.....

I love the old school feel! Graphics are circa 2010, which is good enough. Its more annoying to save scum, which in general is a good thing, but the die rolls tend to suck, and often require multiple successful rolls. So far its a fun game, but there is no undo or preview, which in and of itself is not a huge issue...except... that there are zero prompts to tell you that you will provoke an attack of opportunity or otherwise do something stupid or detrimental. there are several occasions where i was almost done with a long and difficult fight and on the verge of winning without anyone dying and then, "oops, you inadvertantly provoked an attack of opportunity and got killed". so far from what ive seen, you really do need a good balance of skills, stats, and classes to "do everything", so you cant just min max the hell out of combat and neglect the personality skills as actual role playing has meaning and impact. my biggest gripes are that the UI is kind of barebones, clunky, and cumbersome, and that there isnt enough feedback to tell you when you will do something detrimental. There have also been a few traps that you cannot interact with other than to trip them, but i expect that these issues will be resolved in upcoming patches. all in all its a pretty fun game so far and i really look forward to seeing what will happen as it gets polished and updated.

Battle Chasers: Nightwar

Fun at first, then tedious.

TL;DR: fun enough, but the exp curve and pacing are off and you will be redoing a lot of content and grinding in order to progress. When you first start the game, it feels pretty balanced, once you finish your second dungeon however, your characters really seem to lag behind and fights get tedious. Since all crafting stations (until you have the cash) are located randomly in dungeons, it makes it very irritating to try to keep your gear level on pace with the content. Add to this the fact that there seems to be some +/- %variable to damage based on level difference, and the game become something of a chore. The skills are really neat and there is a lot of synergy between party members, but the fact that you are forced to grind (either to find crafting stations or for exp) more than a little to feel like you are making progress really ruins the game for me. As a rule, i enjoy grinding, but the animations are SO SLOW that it really becomes a time sink. Even if you go into the first dungeon again at level cap (for crafting stations and random events), you will have to fight all the battles over again. Even though the overland monsters are smart enough to leave you alone when you are a certain level higher than you, it seems that the dungeon monsters exist only to artificially stretch out the time spent playing instead of having actual content and fun things to do.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker - Imperial Edition Bundle

Fun, except....

The gameplay is great, combat is exciting, and classes are interesting... The giant jarring flaw that this game has for me is that fact that many of your quests are timed, often with hidden timers. I spent a lot of real life time finishing a quest only to discover that btw, your companion that just ran off for no reason is dead beacause you were busy doing something else that the game said was vital. I have some OCD issues with time and time managment, i personally find all these timed quests to be very unimersive and stressful, other may argue that it makes the game more realistic. Personally, i prefer not to have that much reality in my fantasy RPGs. The fact that you will spend a LOT of time looking at your avatar sloooowly going around the map certainly isn't fun. Quest triggered locations that you pass by 500 times is irritating, given the fact that time is the most vital resource is very frustrating. You WILL be doing a lot of save scumming if you want to "complete everything", a lot. It isn't all bad, in fact it is mostly good: the gameplay is solid, the characters actually seem to react to how you repsond to them, and the combat has a lot of facets and more than one approach. Pathfinder really gives you a lot of class options (i stopped playing DnD after 3.5) compared to most RPG, and you can explore a lot of unconventional party builds. TL;DR Great game, but the timed nature of many quests might ruin it for you.

Vikings - Wolves of Midgard

First impressions

Very clearly a console port. No WASD movement, all keyboard and mouse, WASD rolls only. Controls are very counterintuitive and take some getting used to. Gameplay is pretty standard ARPG, nothing special, but not too bad either. Story is nothing spectacular either. All in all, playable, though nothing spectacular.
