TTRPG Trapped in an Unoptimized Coffin

As a die-hard Kindred fan who still holds Bloodlines as the absolute pinnacle of atmospheric RPG storytelling, seeing Swansong debut DRM-free on GOG feels like an instant win. No intrusive third-party launchers, no digital handcuffs, just pure, offline World of Darkness political intrigue. But let’s be brutally honest out of the gate: if you are expecting the freedom or immersive-sim flexibility of VTMB, look elsewhere. Swansong is a pure detective game heavily inspired by The Council, where you control three distinct Kindred unraveling a conspiracy in Boston. When the game lets you play politics, leverage disciplines, and engage in high-stakes rhetoric confrontations, the writing actually shines. Every single stat on your character sheet matters, and a failed social check actively shapes your narrative rather than just throwing a "game over" screen at you. However, I make absolutely zero excuses for the terrible PC performance. This game looks like an early PS4 title yet runs with the stuttering, hitching defiance of a broken tech demo on modern hardware. The character animations are unforgivably stiff—vampires stand around like unpolished department store mannequins while facial expressions remain entirely dead during supposedly tense conversations. In terms of technical optimization, the engine suffers from severe structural flaws: erratic GPU usage, abysmal asset streaming, poor multi-core CPU utilization, and egregious Unreal Engine shader compilation stutters that spike frame times every time you turn a corner or trigger dialog. Do not pay full price for this under any circumstances. Thankfully, GOG isn't messing around—the complete Primogen Edition, which bundles the DLC packs, the soundtrack, and the Boston By Night digital book, literally just debuted today at an aggressive 90% off launch discount for $5.99. At that specific price point, it is an absolute steal for the narrative alone. Snag it while the launch window discount lasts, but be prepared to brute-force your way through a heavily unoptimized port.

Game breaking bug

This is a game I bought on EPIC, on Primogen Edition. And the game was AWESOME. Until a known BREAKING BUG ruined my game at 36 hours of play. Because that game has ONLY ONE save, and the bug had happened before the automatic save, without me realizing anything was amiss. In any other game, I would have reloaded a previous save. But here, no. Because the game designer thought they were too cool for multiple saves. I understand the pseudo-design-decision to limit saves to avoid save scumming. But as far as I am concerned, that means the designer prefers you to lose your full game experience because of one of their bugs, than risking you save scumming. That's an interesting mix of lack of respect and arrogance. So, if you buy that game, you've been warned. P.S.: Since then, I take precautions to never buy anymore that kind of "one-save" game. Which is why, despite my support to GOG, I won't re-buy it here.

Alright, more Vampire The Masquerade! <3

I bought the game on Epic on release, played it through and loved it for the most part. Yes, I also liked the game scenes with the vampire kid. No, it did not annoy me at all. I think it has been kinda cute. The game is basically made of one level after another, maybe a crime scene investigation or an prison break scene or the vampire court meeting at the beginning. And you are playing one of three special vampire characters in each scene. You can not chose which one to play, you are playing their stories but you get to chose what they are doing in these levels, more or less at least. Yeah, choices matter! In these levels you can do some to a lot of things, but never leave these scenes until you found the solution or exit or whatever you are there for. And then the game switches to a different vampire character and scene and you are playing how the story unfolds for them. Gameplay is basically doing RPG-like conversations or environmental riddles and quests. You use your vampire powers etc. I think it even has got some little fighting and action mechanics, but nothing extraordinary or special, but it has been fun to me. Although I had a game breaking bug as well in that bar, I could enjoy the game. I could work around the bug somehow and advance. I don't really remember unfortunately, what I did back then to tell you about it now. Maybe someone warned me about that bug and I copied my savegames manually after every gaming session or something. But really, that bar level (or was it a disco? Definitely some sort of club) was heavily bugged. There also was that NPC guy who should advance one sidequest, but he did not do anything, really weird, immersion breaking stuff. The game has been patched a few times since though, I played it at release day and did get only one patch or so. - I do not fear the bugs anymore really, I think the devs sorted the hardcore ones out with the first two patches. So, if you like Vampire The Masquerade and are looking for a another fun adventure in the World of Darkness(tm), please go for it. I just bought the Primogen Edition of Swansong here on GOG plus the prorder pack with the 3 costumes for only a couple Euros. (These costumes are nice to have but nothing you really need.) This cheap price made my day, since I wanted to replay the game anyway soon and love collecting my games DRM-free. Well, my recommendation, fellow kindred.

Expect Telltale not Bloodlines

If you've played The Council from the same developers, then you know what to expect. A skill driven dialogue/exploration game with some choice and consequence. There is no combat, the closest the game comes is stand-offs in dialogue. You play as three different vampires from different clans, each with a different story that ultimately interweave. You assign them base skills and powers at the start and then slowly gain experience by completing main and side objectives which allow you to increase your skills and disciplines further. Your skill and discipline also have limited use, adding a layer of resource management: choosing which skill to use when, based on what you may need later on. I think it overall did a good job of using the setting in a interesting way, and they handled the lore more competently than newer releases. The disciplines also match perfectly into The Council's skill system. The game can be pretty rough around the edges at times, it did not run very well when I played it at launch. The characters can look weird to bad sometimes. But nothing too bad. Overall I enjoyed it as a fan of The Council, Telltale, Life is Strange type narrative games.

Anti-Player Design is Anti-Player

The save system is worse than FNAF: Security Breach. No manual saves, and the checkpoints are spread SO far apart that mistakes means for all intents and purposes, you're just going to be redoing the chapter. Also do not use the 'reset' because you'll wind up a level 1 scrub with no skills in your skill tree in end game, as the 'reset' eats all of your previous progress and doesn't refund anything. This is on top of being uneven in story and visually bland. Would love to give 0 stars but that's not possible, so I'll sign off with DO NOT recommend unless you're just really into suffering for no payoff.
