On paper the worst; somehow my favorite
Generally considered the worst of the trilogy, this is actually my favorite. -It recycles assets and maps from the first game. An understandable disappointment for fans of the first, this leads in many cases to a better experience. Areas are more polished and feel more lively and complete. -The faction warfare is a buggy mess of repetitive goals, uncompletable quests, and total lack of progression. All of which is absolutely the case. But a weird, chaotic, glitchy world with no real progression is not really a problem if your gameplay style is aimless anyway. -The plot is difficult to follow. True of the first two, actually, and also not a problem for me. The Zone is like a menagerie of grim delights to explore, into which an unnecessary linear entry has been inserted. Its main virtue is forcing me to explore paralyzingly creepy underground complexes. -Introduces equipment upgrade trees. Clear Sky's main contribution to the series, this somehow added just the hit of investment and payoff that my wanderings needed. It adds a new facet to judging what treasure to keep and what to sacrifice. "I just found a delightful new gun that, when upgraded, will beat out my current one, but I'm over weight. Do I sacrifice my beloved rifle (I've named her Shootsy)?" It's less brilliantly original than the first entry. It's less polished, less directed, and more meaninglessly sprawling than Pripyat. But it fills out the experience that I love most and remains my favorite.
