Ys-Like with a bump system!

A 3D PS1 era style Ys like, with a obvious Ys like system. Designed at the time for those with a limited access to to many buttons on whatever surface. Narrowing it down to skill to side swipe or back attack enemies. It plays so far very well, with a very jagged story, but that is forgiveable with some of the humor tucked into the game along the way. A game with a ton of spirit and charm, worth the budgeted price!

A once-in-a-lifetime game

I had already played these developers' previous Anodyne series and was completely blown away. Do not be deceived. While this may seem a quirky 3D platformer with a wacky sense of humor, that is just the surface of a game that shows its true face way after you have acquainted yourself with the world's structure. The greatest joy and the greatest value in these developers' games is in finding the myriad of boundary-breaking secrets scattered all throughout the world. Think fake walls, cracks in what you would assume are continuous invisible walls, one-time trips to completely unhinged locations found in seemingly out-of-bounds regions that leave you wondering what did you even witness. At their core these are games whose mechanics are meant to be understood and exploited to break the game's more traditional boundaries - and you'll have the developers happily reward your efforts. Angeline Era, just like Anodyne and Anodyne 2, have a very specific design philosophy centered around breaking the game itself and indulging in its world and with its story in a very spiritual and heartfelt way. As such, it might not strike a chord with everyone, but it did with me. It is extremely hard to compare Angeline Era with other games, they are very much a one-of-a-kind experience because it is not afraid to show its inner workings for you to manipulate. This game is worth every penny, for the design, the humor, the characters, the sheer amount of content at display (around 21 h to complete the main story). I cheer these madlads on! You have filled a bugdog-shaped hole in my heart I didn't know I had!

Great so far, Nostalgic even in 2025

Just started trying the game out and so far loving it. There is a charm to it that doesn't give me the sense of pain of just attempting to go through the first few minutes in terms of using a controller when moving the character around, which is marvelous the combat system being simple enough to have a casual session. Being within the realm of controls that are easy to learn/hard to master when on different difficulties, and that alone gives me motivation to go though beating my first boss (Biggest and funniest one so far in memory) Story wise it has given me enough interest to lock-in and actually play a new game in my backlog for once; hunker down for the next few weeks to figure out what happened in the setting, what is happening with my Player character, and what is going to happen when I reach the end. It really is an art to make a game feel nostalgic of the 2000's era games in the year 2025. None of the dialogue makes me cringe or hurt my eyes whatsoever in the first hour I have played and gave me a good chuckle a few times. I may come back adding more to this review when I do beat the game and remember to add more things I felt about the game, and as of now... I cannot recommend it enough to try it out or keep it in your backlog when you have the money and time on your hands.

A fun challenge with a lot of charm

The movement and combat took some getting used to but once I did the skill involved was rewarding and fun. This game kept surprising me throughout the ~18 hours it took me to finish it. The creators' personality and wit shine through every aspect of this game, from the visuals and soundtrack to the level design and story.
