worthwhile and fun one-way trip

Having had sort of stumbled into Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon to begin with (with zero expectations) I was pleasantly surprised by how visually appealing, well-designed and fun the base game was. The only thing it was really missing was an excuse to play it for longer... And here it is. The expansion ramps up the graphics almost into "genuine art" territory while keeping performance smooth and load times short; adds new crafting resources and recipes (like shells or these bubbles of luminescent goo that are oddly satisfying to harvest); new items, opponents and fun battles (like a "squid ship" that fires its own crew at you); and yet another competently-written, humorous at times, well-acted-out plot (this time about the fate of a fleet of rebels that dared oppose the king). The world of Sarras is intriguing enough to keep you invested during the 10-12 hours you'll spend there, exploring and unraveling its plot. The new items introduce some interesting mechanics (like a set of gloves that increases your spell power based on how many creatures you have in your bestiary; another that follows every enemy kill with a barrage of missiles; or a cloak that leaves a "decoy" behind when you dodge, which -- in turn -- poisons enemies that stumble into it); quests keep up the "don't know what to expect" trend from the base game and the central storyline is competently written and engaging, though a little throwaway come the end. All in all -- what with new fast travel mechanics and neat stories throughout -- the Sanctuary is a solid addition to the base game that I had a blast exploring. The only weird thing (especially now that you can keep playing the base game after "finishing" it) is that it seems to be a one-way trip: once you finish the expansion, it looks like you leave Sarras for good.

Good experience

More of Tainted Grail! Started this DLC at what I thought was a low level 19 or so having started it as soon as unlocking the second chapter on adventurer difficulty. Definitely felt under leveled at the start as killing simple monsters took some time but could definitely feel my character get stronger over the course of the DLC which was nice. Did not die too much in combat, would only really happen if I dashed out of map and fell. Though I did struggle in some encounters which made for a challenge. More of the gorgeous picturesque scene locations you experienced in the base game! Would be nice to export some of these to other games... Good performance! Though I will say my game did crash once while I had none for base game. I had a couple other minor map bugs but it did not negatively impact the experience. Frequent automatic saves are clutch! Great addition if you plan on buying and playing the base game!

Unfinished

It's got mostly the same upsides and downsides as the original campaign, I just lost the patience for it. It's a cool new side area, with interesting world desing and creature design, and their signature quaint sidequests. But it's just unfinished. The main story of the expansion is extremely short and stops making sense by the end. Things you never heard of get mentioned like you should know them, character motivations are incomprehensible. The final stretch is just so rushed that you don't know what you're doing and why, so the climax is ruined. What happened guys? I thought the base game was a success, and now you could afford to finish content before you release it?
