We Used to Pay $50 for Games This Good

This game just hits every goal it set out to achieve. It takes clear inspiration from Nintendo and old-school Paper Mario, and even though Nintendo isn't interested in making more of those, this developer shows that that kind of design never became obsolete. The scope and pace of the game remind me of the best parts of games from that early 2000s era of console gaming, with each chapter of the game putting a different and fun spin on the core game loop. I can't sing enough praises for this game. * the music is excellent * the writing is charming and family friendly * the art both riffs on something we're familiar with and still makes everything delightful to look at * as a piece of software, everything is snappy, functional, and polished (few exceptions, bordering on nitpicks) * the hard mode offers a fun challenge * the game design doesn't waste your time and always asks you to do something new and fun * the combat systems, and the equippable trinkets, offer a surprising amount of depth and strategy * this may not have been a goal of theirs, but the game works flawlessly on Linux via Proton Besides Kickstarter backers, I counted about 30 names in the credits, with a core team seemingly of about 14. This small team put together a game every bit as good as the ones we loved 20-25 years ago, and they're only charging half as much as we paid for those games back then.

Beyond Charming, a Story with Soul

This game scratches an itch in the vein of 2D characters in 3D environments in a style of highly strategic RPGs with very narrow character parameters. All the colorful characters of dragons, unicorns, gryphons, mice, and so forth are a welcome charm to interact with, though nobody will tell me where the dreaded IT department is yet. I do feel it's a bit more difficult to hit these action commands or timed hits or what have you than other games in this particular subgenre, but so far I don't feel too constrained to hold onto my precious MP or SP that I don't get to have fun trying other actions in battle besides the basic attack. Money's tight, so I just hope there's a way to make some cash in this game, because there are tons of things to spend it on, what with the refreshing customization of Flynt's outfits and office. A minotaur took back my sun gem, the dingus. The premise is sound and solid, with the opportunity for things to really go off the rails, which I'm looking forward to. This could really hold up as a whole franchise, and while I'm only two chapters deep thus far, the variety in environments has been thrilling, taking you from the gentrifying enchanted forest of the Three Little Pigs to the maddening Lovecraftian Shadow Over Innsbeak--and the jazzy soundtrack manages to fit these environments to a T both in and out of battle. All of the characters have such strong, well-defined voices, too, even the less predominant NPCs from your cubicle-shackled coworkers to the happy-go-lucky inhabitants of Happy Howl Hollow. I've been playing almost non-stop since I got this game, because I just can't wait to see what happens next, and they stick to their premise, demonstrating the ability to pull from a wealth of source material and to enrich it with character and life. And the story. This story is amazing. The most moving story in a video game in years. I don't want to give spoilers, but it works on so many levels, and is relatable to so many more people than the usual fare that people laud these days where the stories end up just regaling us with what feels like somebody's personal diaries. This is a story about stories, where they come from, where they're going, and what they're made of. All the imagery, all the significance, is played subtly with the keenness of a genius, wrapped in humble wit and timeless charm. It's a travesty that this game isn't being talked about more than it is, because you will want to experience this one for yourself. This is a journey you should take for yourself. Only major issue I ran into was I had to use an external program to get my Pro Controller to be recognized by this game. It really is a solid controller that deserves to be treated as standard, even if it is a little uncommon and a bit pricey and has the retro original layout for face buttons.

GOTY candidate!

The best game of 2026 so far. Great humour, excellent soundtrack (reminds me of A Hat in Time!) and a rewarding mix of combat, puzzles and exploration. I havent played Paper Mario (duh), but this game's charm struck me instantly nonetheless. I'm already 19 hours in and can't stop. Extra points for the Ocarina of Time reminiscence!

Brilliant Homage to Paper Mario

I'm about 7 hours in and I'm totally hooked by the humor and gameplay. My first reaction to the video was, "That *really* looks like Paper Mario!" and I worried that it might be an un-inspired clone. Well, this definitely uses that formula, but takes it further by placing a fairy-tale in a modern day epic of fighting back against an evil corporate overlord. And it works! The battle system rewards thinking and tactics, as well as providing the expected button pushes for offensive- and defensive-actions. Drinking coffee gives you Mocha Points, so you can carry out special charged attacks, and "trinkets" give you badges for extra effects, such as poison immunity, or extra-special attacks. Again, if you played Thousand Year Door, this is so very similar, but also different and well thought out. Finally, there is an exploration component to the game that rewards looking around and in corners for special objects or coins, as well as locations and characters to talk to. I agree that the humor is light-hearted, and appropriate for pretty much any audience. The writing is good, and you are guaranteed to chuckle and even laugh out loud at some of the jokes and gags. The music is also quite good, and I find myself humming some of the tunes even now as I write this. Finally, I chose to buy this on GOG so I can just download the full game and run it on my desktop, without having to worry about any internet connection.
