Roll for History: Natural 20! If you are a fan of both Dungeons & Dragons and video games, join us as we use our nat 20 skill check to take a look back at the amazing game that is Icewind Dale.
Currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, Icewind Dale
is a role-playing game that’s based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition ruleset. It’s set in the Forgotten Realms campaign and is a must-play for RPG fans and those that are missing out on tabletop games of D&D right now.
Created by Black Isle Studios, Icewind Dale has an expansion, a follow-up sequel
, and even an Enhanced Edition
released in 2014, so obviously, the team did something right here. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to see what makes the game so special!
Let’s take a look back at the plot of this iconic title
While the gameplay of D&D is definitely a highlight of this roleplaying experience, you need to have a fun, engaging story to keep players interested too. With Icewind Dales and the amazing world built around it, there’s a lot to like.
You play as a roving band of up to six adventures that, like many good campaigns, start off as a small task and slowly but surely turns into an epic adventure. You’ll meet a variety of characters both good and bad, all while fighting zombies, skeletons, trolls, and more.
Your party can consist of classic D&D classes like Barbarian, Druid, Cleric, Paladin, and Fighter, and finding the perfect combination of these can help you in various elements of the game, from Charisma-based skill checks to pure brawn and fighting capabilities.
Fight and talk your way through interesting scenarios, slowly but surely uncovering many of the secrets of Icewind Dale. If you love classic Dungeons & Dragons storytelling, you love the time you have with this title.
Classic roll-based combat made easy
One of the most fun aspects of Dungeons & Dragons is some of the randomness that comes with the dice mechanics found in the game and the same holds true for Icewind Dale.
Even though you can build out your character and improve a variety of skills, there is still a small percent chance that your rolls could fail miserably, adding a unique sense of uncertainty to each encounter.
With pen-and-paper D&D, you also have to be able to quickly do some math, but thankfully, Icewind Dale does all of that for you, allowing you to focus on enjoying the experience and not crunching numbers.
What makes this whole system interesting (especially for fans of D&D) is that it is actually real-time based, instead of turn-based, but you can pause the action at any time to set up different attacks and strategies mid-fight.
Is it worth playing in 2020?
Absolutely! If you are a fan of classic RPGs or Dungeons & Dragons
, there’s a lot to love here, from building out your adventuring party and exploring the world, to fine-tuning your fighting skills.
When it released in 2000, it received many positive reviews, and was even up for a handful of awards in the RPG category, only losing out to another iconic game, Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn
. Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition
from 2014 on GOG.COM comes with a set of visual and gameplay improvements as well as the original version of the games as a bonus goodie.Plan on checking out Icewind Dale? What are your favorite Dungeons & Dragons-based video games? Let us know down in the comments!
