Try out the first trip! Signs of the Sojourner: Prologue is available on GOG.COM. You can claim it here

Signs of the Sojourner is a narrative card game about relationships and connecting with people.

Your deck is your character, reflecting your experiences and shaping your relationships. Make decisions about who your character is in this world, pushing forward with the cards you’re dealt.

You take over your mother's store after her death, traveling to diverse locations in order to acquire goods for the shop. Along the way, encounter optimistic stories, compassionate characters, and delightful surprises in a world where travel is difficult and climate change has made life hard.

Key Features

Forge new friendships, rivalries, and connections through card game conversations. Play cards to match the tone and perspective of your partner or disregard their feelings to sell your own point of view. The story continues either way.

Venture forth to find rare and useful goods to aid your town. Make difficult choices along the way. The consequences shape your character’s deck and every conversation that follows, en route to many possible endings.

You'll explore the world, but also explore what it means to return home.

Meet and grow alongside unforgettable characters. Will you hold on to your childhood friendships? Will your adventures on the road lead you down different paths? Who will you become, and what will you leave behind?

I think it's a good game, but

a few things bother me: 1) Some things are scripted. I understand, that this is for story reasons, but to me it does make the game feel more repetitive than necessary. (Which it might not, if a game were longer.) 2) Having to choose a card to gain and loose: I get the intention behind that, but it's annoying to have been able to build a varied deck to successfully converse with a variety of people only to be prompted to loose it. I usually try to mitigate it by "replacing" one of my cards with an identical one, but sometimes I had the opportunity to add an "action" (like "redraw") to cards (or I managed to get it as a choice before) and replacing it with a "blank" card with the same symbols isn't the same and will probably impede following conversations negatively, e. g. because now I might have my hand clogged up with cards I can't match up and I can't redraw anymore. Which is especially bad in combination with 3) Yes, I can choose not to talk to people, but not talking to people means no stories and no goods to bring home to the store, which means there is no point in playing to begin with. 3) Fatigue: I understand that it's probably for balancing, but this combined with having to choose a card to add to my deck and a card to loose from my deck, means long trips are doomed to failure and only circling around the same towns near Bartow is boring. I want to explore and find new stories. The latter is very difficult for me with how 2) and 3) work. The little friend you find (also scipted) is nice, but he only helps me once a trip (if at all) and considering travel distances, this doesn't really help me. 4) I managed to bring a lot of stuff to the shop once, but not all of it sold and when I returned with the next load, this non-sold stuff had just vanished. No explanation about what happened to it. I like this game. The story, art, characters, I like them. The music even manages to give the towns I visit a little personality. I'd just like a little more freedom.

A bit too "cozy"

I love the art and the presentation. The game is polished, beautiful, and genuinely different. What could have been better is the conversations and story. For a game that's so deeply themed on interactions, there was no dialogue at all. I would have loved to have had some choices to make during conversations, or even seen my gameplay reflected in what happened, but the player character is a silent protagonist. That is compounded by the fact that the story is very light -- the focus is much more on seeing others interact than it is about the player. Still, the game has its charm and I would like to see what these developers do next.

Don't overlook this narrative gem

It's not a perfectly designed game, I was from time to time met with frustrations. But the art, writing, score and character design are excellent. The interdependence and interplay between the story and the gameplay should be a model for narrative games. I'm looking forward to playing it again and trying to advance different storylines. Everything about it feels so original and thoughtfully well-realized. I highly recommend giving this a look if it sounds appealing to you.
