Description
Step into the role of Christopher Columbus and chart a course to an unknown world of discovery, exploration, and conquest! The Commemorative Edition of Seven Cities of Gold is a remake of the 1984 classic, featuring enhanced graphics and sound.

As a fledgling 15th century explorer you have been given a mandate by the Spanish Crown to set sail for the New World and establish new settlements for the fortune and glory of Spain. You will have complete control over every aspect of your expedition - from the initial provisioning of your voyage, to the construction of forts and missions on newly discovered continents. Key to your survival will be how you interact with the native population of the New World - negotiate with a tribe’s Chief to establish peaceful trade ties or wipe out entire villages and plunder their resources.

Fill up your coffers as you trade, loot, or mine your way to new resources and treasures. If you manage to haul back enough gold to the Old World to make an impression on the King and Queen of Spain, you may even be rewarded with a promotion and receive greater royal aid in financing your next conquest.

With your daring and skill, you will rise from unknown explorer to Viceroy of a new empire!
  • Command a series of daring expeditions to the New World - take control of mapping uncharted wilderness, building far-flung outposts, and establishing trade relations with over 8 different indigenous tribes.
  • Choose to explore a historically accurate map of the Americas in the 15th century or a randomly generated New World.
  • Hire men for your journey and equip your ship with food, animals, arms, and other items for trading.

Reviews are describing a different game!

It's fairly obvious that all but a single reviewer on here have never actually purchased and played the game that GOG is offering here, and for a simple reason: They mention Dani Bunten and 'their dad played this in his childhood'. Dani Bunten had *zero* to do with this version. This game was designed by SEGA, and unless your dad is just now turning 21 then he most certainly did not play it in his childhood. This is a re-imagining of an old 8-bit Atari and Commodore 64 game of the same name, but the gameplay is significantly changed in this version - for the better in some cases, but for the worse in most others. Certainly the graphics and sound are improved, but outside of that ... The original game that Dani Bunten designed was rather lacking on any clear goals in the gameplay: You just sailed around, marched over the land, and explored the map. You could slaughter entire native tribes, plundering them of their gold and food, and basically have no penalty for doing so. After a while you retired from explorations. This version has a totally different gameplay dynamic: The Spanish crown gives you objectives, and if you fail to meet them within the allotted time, they basically consider your voyage a failure and withdraw support. You can't slaughter enemy tribes anymore without severe punishment. Exploring the map is tougher, and with less fanfare (in the original 8-bit a little ditty would play and announce thing such as "You have discovered the mouth of a major river!" In this version absolutely nothing happens: You're just mapping endlessly). I've yet to even discover a lost city of gold - whilst the original game always had 2 hidden-away on the map. The random world generator of the original game, which logically placed mountain ranges and rivers, is kinda not as good in this version. I've seen quite a few rivers running through the deserts! GOG should reset the reviews on this tedious, lackluster game. People are basically reviewing a whole other game!

Save your money.

This game sucks. Let me repeat that in case it didn't sink in the first time: This game SUCKS. I was a huge fan of the original, and this is nothing like it. The graphics are better, of course, but that's the only thing going for it and it's not saying much. The gameplay has taken at least three steps back. It's just not very much fun to play this version. You want a remake of a classic game that keeps the essence of the original and improves it for modern times, this is not it. Try Sid Meier's Pirates or the new X-COM. This one will sit there collecting virtual dust.

Similar but not the original!

Careful, this is not the original you might know and fondly remember from the C64, but a remake. Similar, but not the same.

Nice bit of nostalgia

I still have the CD that came with my sound blaster 16 sound card back in the day, that had about 10 games with it. This was one of them. I loved it then, still love it now. The music in Spain is still stuck in my head even after all this years. Still have the instruction manual too! Basics first: In the game you are basically Columbus and set sail to the Indies from Spain. You have 10 trips to build at least 1 Colony, 1 Mission, and 3 Forts. The game's difficulty level affects how much gold you start with on your first trip. If you manage to build those 5 settlements on time, you'll be appointed Viceroy and can continue to explore freely with patronage. In Spain you get audiences with the King and Queen and are awarded promotions. The Commissioner shows you how much of the map you've got covered and other key bits of info of what you've achieved so far. Finally, the Harbor Master lets you buy ships, hire people (soldiers, clergy, explorers and horses) and buy equipment (food, arms, animals, plants). Once you set sail, you have to do the best you can to avoid reefs and storms as you travel west. Seasons change also and it can be a bit tricky with a large fleet. Once you find land, you can start exploring the continent. Villages and gold mines are the most important things to look for. You leave people at the mines with food and they continue to mine on their own. Villages you enter to meet the chief and trade goods (or run away if they are hostile). Your walking speed and food consumption are affected by the terrain. That's the core game. I personally loved the music and how quick the pace could be if you wanted to, especially once you find mines. That said, it gets tricky balancing how many inland trips you do each time with the amount of food you have. Your expedition gets full quickly when trading at the beginning of the game as it is quite small. Interacting with chiefs is always hit or miss and does not seem to follow a logic. 4/5 in my book

Repetitive gameplay

Not a bad game, but is very repetitive. Land your ship, enter a village, find the chief, give goodies, receive goodies. RInse and repeat. After some voyages your most important good is food, you get rich pretty easily but food is scarce. SO focus first in making money and farming food and on your 8 or 9 voyage do the colony, Mission, forts
