I have played the original several times, I don't need to know more than that, just a modernization to make it run without third party programs was all I needed, but this is just gorgeous, this is my christmas gift
I recently played the original to prepare me for the Remaster release and the mouse controls for Soul Reaver 1 are a welcome addition!
Certain passages (like the winding tunnel in the first 15 minutes) that allowed you to walk forward and had Raziel "auto-turn" to follow the tunnel are broken by the new camera though and do feel a bit clumsy to navigate.
But the game finally looks like you think you remember it looked back in the day! ^^
But what the makes the Remaster a must-buy for Soul Reaver fans is the bonus content in the main menu. Without spoiling the surprise: Long time fans may be able to experience something they only read about before.
Also very nice to see that they do include nods to the actors, writers and fans(!) that made he franchise great.
I played the Blood Omen demo as a kid till I was blue in the face and after a wait that seemed like forever, I got the full game and played it constantly exploring everywhere, then Soul Reaver was announced for PlayStation, Dreamcast and PC, I got my hands on that and the rest is, as they say, history and I was hooked on the series.
So you can imagine as a fan of the original games, I was overjoyed to hear this was getting the remaster treatment, now normally I am not a fan of remastering older games and prefer to play them as they were originally intended, (via patches and the work the GOG team do to keep software alive), however these days getting Soul Reaver 1 to work on newer hardware is a real slog and results (if any) really do very. Thus I was more than happy to throw my money at this pack, the upgrades are just gorgeous, the sound, graphics and controls have all had overhauls and it is superb work for the dev team.
The bonus content included contains making off and behind the scenes footage, outtakes, concept art and a few other little extras that really add to this collection making it feel like a true definitive remaster of both games.
I recommend the series as a whole and this is definitely one collection to buy for anyone who enjoys rich lore filled story arcs and has never played the series before and a wonderful way to revisit these classics for current fans.
I play the original since Blood Omen, and is with tear that i can do it again with moder hardware. The fact that I lauch at my birthday was a sign for me. I ever back the book, a first for me. I Hope will all show that we want more of this beautiful and dark universe
