Yoo feel exceedingly empty inside.

Something went terribly wrong here. A Hat in Time is a wonderful, charming game that's pure fun to play from start to finish. The new Death Wish challenge mode that takes up the majority of this DLC is a twisted, unforgiving reflection of the base game, a poorly designed romhack. Too many of the missions involve tedious memorization and busywork, turning the previously lovable stages and bosses into a slog of a grind. Much of the "challenge" is artificial, lazily slapping more traps, projectiles, and hazards into otherwise unchanged levels. Even the decent challenges are dragged down by the unforgiving bonus objectives, often demanding perfection from the player by imposing strict time limits, or giving the player one hit and no use of hat powers. Death Wish tries to imitate other brutally difficult games, failing to capture what makes those games work and losing sight of what made A Hat in Time such a fun, accessible, replayable game. Most of the new content (storybooks, community made levels and the new unlockables) is gated behind this unforgiving train wreck of a mode. The easy mode is a band-aid over the problem, it means the devs don't have to rebalance or make creative challenges as long as what's there is "technically completable." Easy Mode isn't even available on the worst challenges, leaving you no choice but to commit to the tedious, unfun grind. Seal the Deal is rushed, glitchy, and sucks the fun and charm out of this game. With how short the Arctic Cruise chapter is, it seems most of their attention went into Death Wish, baffling when you consider how lazy and sloppily made the challenges are. If you want to see creative, engaging, challenging levels for this game, I'd suggest checking out modded levels. Hopefully, the developers will recognize where they went wrong and get back on track by the time of the next DLC. It'd break my heart to see one of my favorite games burn out on a bad note. (the seals were cute though)

Free should be it's only price

To begin with, A hat in time is genuinely the most fun I've ever had with any platformer on PC. The controls are so smooth I swear this game is trying to have sex with me. The levels, characters, music and everything else I don't need to mention is very well done and gives a smile to even the most cynical of gamers. That being said, this DLC is hot garbage. The first aspect of this content is the new 'Arctic Cruise' Chapter. When the game doesn't bug out thinking you don't have the DLC, you can play all three levels of this new chapter plus some time rifts. Hat kid still feels good to control and ovarall atmosphere fits the game really well, however level design is meh to bad. The last of the three levels is just plain horrible and is easily the worst in the game sofar. I feel like the potential of this chapter was ruined when their one game mechanic fails and the cruise ship layout was just confusing, combining too make the fetch quests so damn bad. I would be lying if I told you that the arrow directing you around only worked about 100% of the time. Again the look, the feel of the world and the characters are still there, but unfortunately the length and level design is so lacking in that same department. The last part is seal the deal which I consider the better of the two. The basic idea is you complete contracts for Snatcher which are just harder versions of the pre-existing levels in the base game. A novel idea and really hits you hard from the beginning and gets worse. I do like me some challenge but holy mother of hat kid, some of this stuff just stop being fun after some much frustrating restarts. Where the controls are designed to be lenient, this challenge is more frustrating than rewarding. Even with the promise of more hats, it feels so damn hollow to win. Granted it is quite cheap, even free if you got it on the first day. However the final product feels tacked on, something more that I would expect from a free update than a separate piece.

Not Perfect, But a Fine Addition to Base

This DLC comes in two parts a new story chapter and a new challenge mode to add some difficulty to the game. and think it's worth separating the two to make my review more concise, but my rating is based on my overall feelings on the whole DLC. Arctic Cruise - This chapter is noticeably shorter than all the rest, but I still found it to be a charming addition that fit in well with the rest of the game. It only has 3 levels (not including 2 new Time Rifts, which I also found to be quite good) which I personally felt was fair given this DLC is $5 and initially free for those who owned A Hat in Time before the release of this DLC. As for the content, I really enjoyed the first two levels but the finale was in my opinion not nearly up to the level of polish the rest of the game was, even the rest of this DLC. The platforming becomes chaotic, I fought with the camera to locate where I was supposed to go and overall it felt weak, especially because it is incredibly brief. Yet I still enjoyed the new chapter, I do wish the team would work on making the platforming more consistent in the finale. Death Wish - This part of the DLC seems to be where the most time went in, it remixes old levels with completely new objectives, harder bosses, etc. While most people seem to dislike the challenges I found them to be invigorating. Admittedly some of them are almost annoyingly difficult, but for the most part I found them a welcome change of pace. If it becomes too hard, you can even have the difficulty lowered for a slight hit to your Pons (the collectible 'money' of the game). I don't really have many complaints about Death Wish other than sometimes the difficulty on optional objectives is insanely high, making some of them nearly impossible for me to complete. However I believe this a great value for $5! A very fun set of levels! I didn't have any technical problems with installing it either, as it appears some users have (it seems they patched this issue out).

Great platformer, not great mod support

Stand-alone game: -gameplay: Plays great. Just enough challenge. Feels like Mario Odyssey experience for PC. 5/5 -sound: 5/5. Original and enjoying. -controls: 5/5 DLC: -Seal the Deal: Artic Cruise is fun. Seal the Deal challenges are hard, but a little bit of grinding will still allow you to get the rewards. 3/5 -Nyakuza Metro: another free roam world. Awesome. 5/5 Overall: Great replay value with screen shots, modding, and many collectibles including tunes, hats, stickers, and more. This game on the GoG version is between and 3 and 4. It lost points because the GoG version doesn't have the best mod support. I had to get some mods in an interesting way where as mods on Steam should also be on Nexus and sadly the developer doesn't make it easier on us GoG users.

A good deal if you want a challenge

I enjoyed this DLC! For $5, it provides a lot of content. Though the Arctic Cruise chapter is shorter than other chapters in the game, it's densely packed and a lot of fun to explore and run around in. It's a bit more difficult than the base game, especially the second act, which has a timed element, but I'd say it's still lenient. Death Wish will be where most of your time is spent. It's essentially a challenge mode: while it adds some unique levels, it's primarily existing levels with some added challenge, or passive contracts that you do while exploring the world. This mode is a LOT harder than the base game. And the optional goals for each contract are astronomically harder. I died maybe 10 times in the entire base game. I've died at least 12 times on every single Death Wish I've completed (except two of the early ones). Even with the Peace and Tranquility option, which lowers the difficulty of a contract for a small amount of Pons, these are brutally hard. So that is something to consider if you're interested in this DLC.
