A Nostalgic Action RPG Done Right

Every so often, an indie game comes along that gets called “the new 2D Zelda.” I think there are far too many examples to even mention, but after playing *Elementallis*, I believe we finally have a game that achieves something very few manage: capturing the soul of those classics without feeling like a simple copy. It does so with a top-down perspective, real-time combat, and an adventure structure that immediately recalls *A Link to the Past*, while still maintaining its own identity and an unexpectedly compelling story. That story takes us to Elregir, a world divided into eight biomes tied to the elements: fire, water, ice, earth, nature, electricity, wind, and aether. The disappearance of these elementals has thrown everything into chaos, and the protagonist—silent, much like in old Japanese RPGs—travels across this world on a mission of redemption. This approach works very well: the premise is classic, but the way the game builds its NPCs, their problems, and its overall tone makes the story far more engaging than it initially seems. In fact, I genuinely found myself reading the dialogue with interest, something that did not happen at all for me with *Sea of Stars* or *Chained Echoes*. Where *Elementallis* truly shines is in its use of the elements. Each element is not just a different attack, but also a tool for solving puzzles, opening paths, interacting with the environment, and dealing with enemies in creative ways. Every biome and every temple is designed to make the most of these mechanics, and the loop of progressing, exploring, gaining a new ability, and backtracking feels incredibly smooth. The way elements are selected is reminiscent of the ring menu from *Secret of Mana*. The music deserves special mention. Raúl Sangonzalo’s soundtrack is one of the best the genre has seen in recent years: nearly three hours of synthesizer-driven melodies, occasionally elevated by an electric guitar solo that blends perfectly with the rest of the composition. It is the kind of soundtrack that both accompanies and elevates the adventure at the same time. It is also worth pointing out two important details about the GOG version at the time I write this. On one hand, it does not include achievements; on the other, the soundtrack is not available there, but you can buy it on Bandcamp. Even so, for those of us who prefer playing on GOG without any “phone home” features, this is hardly a major issue. Overall, *Elementallis* is a remarkably successful tribute to the classic Zelda games and one of the best 2D top-down RPGs released in quite some time.

Nonotzelda: A Link to the Pandora's Box

The power of nostalgia is a curious thing. Make-a one man weep, make another man sing. Elementallis is less of an hommage to Link to the Past and more of a reverent rip-off. In parts, it's practically identical. Lovingly crafted no doubt, knowledgeable, skilled, with attention to quirky detail and iconic characters. But they are asking a lot from players, who may not have the same jet pilot reflexes, the same amount of time or patience after 35 years. Which easily makes the rose tinted glasses the number one system requirement. Take these off and the review reads as follows: There are no difficulty or accessibility settings. Some of the bosses are difficult, some are unfair; chance, not skill, determines the outcome. Every potion you use during a boss fight will still be gone upon retry. Stingily sprinkled respawning checkpoints will require you to repeat entire dungeons. There's a button for manual save in the menu, but it doesn't work. If you try to play the game with a keyboard, you will tie your fingers into knots. Don't buy the maps, they are completely useless. If you litter the map with these limited huge treasure markers, it's even less useful. Unity's collision detection is, as always, an ongoing nightmare, which will at times save your skin though. Every area seems to have at least one annoying enemy type that freezes you in place to do with you as they please. Limited inventory and wallet space should be outlawed. The last time I've seen time wasting backtracking at this epic scale was in Mass Effect Andromeda. Switching between forces all the time is a royal pain in the donkey, and it gets more of a pain with every new force aquired – especially since time doesn't stop during switching, it just goes into slow motion. There are nine force types which all open up new pathways, plus several other gadgets like a rope to open other pathways, which means that during the first hours of gameplay, you'll spend most of your time running against walls. Yesterday, a short blackout erased my save file; I was between 12 and 14 hours into the game. My experiment to test my patience and skill ends with this misfortune (which isn't the game's fault evidently).

Elementallis: Captivating Zelda-like

If you grew up with a controller in your hands exploring the lands of Hyrule, get ready for an absolute gem. Elementallis takes the risky bet of capturing the very essence that made the early Zelda games legendary, while offering a unique world and a strong identity of its own. CAPTIVATING STORY: From the very first minutes, you feel genuinely invested. The story is immersive and well-crafted, plunging you into a quest where you truly feel responsible for the fate of this world. MASTERY OF THE ELEMENTS: The core gameplay revolves around mastering the elements, and this is where the game truly shines. Each captured element is far from a simple gimmick: it grants specific, intelligent abilities that are seamlessly integrated into both exploration and combat. The implementation is fluid, ingenious, and satisfying. INGENIOUS TEMPLES: I’ve just completed the second temple, and they are very well designed. Each one encourages careful observation, experimentation, and creative use of your powers. When you get stuck, it’s usually because you need to look closer or think more strategically. This is exactly what you expect from a great Zelda-like. CHALLENGING BOSSES: The bosses follow a well-paced difficulty curve. The first is accessible and helps you master the mechanics, but the second genuinely forced me to build a more elaborate strategy. I had to try several times, and the taste of that victory was incredibly satisfying. VAST WORLD: The map is large and enjoyable to explore. Fortunately, once you activate the teleporters in each zone, fast travel makes getting around much more convenient. TOTAL SONIC IMMERSION: The soundtrack is excellent and, paired with the sound effects, helps immerse you deeply in the adventure. FRANCHISE POTENTIAL: This is the kind of game that deserves sequels. The developers have found a winning formula, and I’m already craving more! In short, Elementallis is a very pleasant surprise. It’s definitely worth playing. 🗡️🛡️👌

If you like classic Zelda - buy

I always loved Zelda on the SNES and GB. This game is very similar and once I started playing it was hard to stop.. Definitely worth buying if you're into this kind of game.
