Really underrated game

This game is definitely a worthy addition to the Baldur's Gate trilogy. The main focus on this is the gameplay and combat. Some of the battles are so massive that there's no way the old infinity engine could have handled it 2 decades ago when Baldur's Gate was first introduced. There are a few flaws that might be annoying at the start though, namely 1) only a very limited number of characters from BG1 can be carried over to Siege of Dragonspear, unlike in ToB where everyone could come over, 2) there's less joinable party members then other Baldur's Gate games, so it can really restrict what kind of parties you'll assemble. 3) The story isn't as good as the original BG1 and BG2, though to be fair it's hard to top the great story telling of Shadows of Amn. The game does not deserve the 2.6 overall rating it currently has. The reason it's score is that low is because a bunch of people review bombed the game upon launch for daring to have a single Transgender character, who's admission to being transgender is very easy to miss given that you have to complete a side quest to unlock the dialog where it's even mentioned.

Enjoyable, but it's no must-play

The main plot is alright and ties together the two main games, the new characters are nice, the gameplay is still solid, there's great loot and also some of the new areas are quite well designed. A lot of the criticism on this expansion is quite overblown. However, theres no denying that there are issues: the writing is very inconsistent outside of the main quest and some of the lines feel like they were written by a teenage intern, not to mention the sidequests suck and don't add much to an experience that already feels quite distant from the sprawling adventure of the original games. One note ragarding the "controversy"... A bunch of people got mad somehow at the presence of a transgender character, citing how forced and hamfisted that revelation was. It's all a bunch of bs. It's one very minor and missable character that gives you a small fetch quest (which you can ignore) that is only completable well after half-way through the story and only if you complete such meaningless quest AND you press them for more info on why they asked you to complete it in the first place they will reaveal to you about their story. It's the exact opposite of it being forced on you.

Yeah just bought it

Game is too linear. Im a powergamer and even played whole BG1EE again from start on to get a cool group of followers. Now with SOD they are all gone. You lose all your party members in chapter 8, even thou I could play chapter 7 in SOD with my main party. I had a very good composition and they just disbanded. You lose the items they have equipped. You lose your money. You have to pick up the 7-8 chars that are available at the start of SOD even if you dont want them. You have no real tank. You cant go back to an old area if you want to switch a follower. Thats so bad! I just decided to get Baeloth but I cant get him anymore. I cant decide where to go on the map (there is no real choice) and I cant decide with which followers I want to play. I hate this scripted shit.

Good time if you tolerated the base game

If you liked the original campaign, you would probably appreciate this one too. It’s relatively short, but dense with fights and story. It has a lot of obvious flaws, the new characters could be obnoxious to someone, the main story is the most flawed in terms of writing. Thematically, it’s somewhat interesting, you deal with war and refugees of warzones, something that usually swept under the rug; the conflict itself is Good vs Good, at least on it’s surface. I appreciate the ambition the developers had for this expansion. It’s not the most graceful in execution, sometimes it’s very un-graceful, but I liked it for what it is. More of the same dungeoneering and fighting monsters. One thing I want to warn is that you can’t travel back to the earlier chapter areas. This was a bit frustrating, I had an unfinished business and the quest asked me to wait 1 day to get a quest reward. I moved forward with the story and couldn’t get it. Be warned.

OK, but too pricey

Nice Addon, especially voice acting of companions. Finally they have some "interiors". Not much, but compared to BG1 it's a lot. Especially love Baeloth short dialogues (with Minsc) and his comments. Story-wise and Role Playing: level of Icewind Dale and ToB. It lacks freedom, but is more than enough to push the game forward, but it's just too small. BTW: Only crash I had was when I made Alt-Tab - game jsut couldn't return to it's normal state. So no crashes, because BG2 has sometimes same issues with Alt+Tab. Just Engine problem. "cdtweaks" mods work like charm. Problems: - Ending has plot holes - you are unable to use _important_ information you learned in both "meeting in woods", last meeting with the Hooded Man in the castle and final talks in the city (so no spoilers). - One companion is built during the game to trust, and finally he/she in fact betrays you - Normal Price is a joke for that short game with that obsolete graphics.
