There is no reason why we shouldn't have ZGI DVD version with its improved movies and resolution.

RTZ Reel Magic might require converting the MPEG1 videos a format that modern computers can handle, but it will allow for a higher resolution version of the game if someone has the savvy to patch it, and GOG puts up that version officially.

Modern computers handle MPEG1 just fine. If you have the RTZ MPEG version, you can literally play the video files on your modern computer by double-clicking on them. The issue is that the 386 that DOSBox is configured to emulate doesn't handle MPEG1's so well. And even if you could "convert" them into a software-renderable format of the era, that wouldn't help much because Return To Zork isn't coded to render FMVs.

Probably the best solution would be to add support for this version to ScummVM. I believe MADE devs want to support it. The engine is already supported, and ScummVM wouldn't need to emulate any new hardware - it should be fairly simple to "wrap" calls to the ReelMagic card and instead render with a modern MPEG1 software codec, which would likely have higher quality playback than the genuine hardware would.

Here's what y'all are missing:

Thanks for the information!

I thought I read somewhere that RealMagic used a non standardized encoding within its versions of Mpeg1 format, but its good to hear that isn't the case.

Voted for RTZ.
Can't they just release the mac version like they have for a bunch of other games recently?
Then we can just emulate it on a mac emulator.
Thanks. Voted for both.
Sorry for the bump, but you guys won't really need a Mac emulator in order to play RTZ. ScummVM supports it.
Thanks for this post. I too would like to see the MPEG version of RTZ. There were a lot of additional scenes, etc. that were included in that. Since I bought and own RTZ from GOG, I'm going to vote for this as well.
Hope to see them ! Play the games as they should have been played !
Sadly, Reelmagic RTZ don't work in dosbox or scummvm.
Someone needs to get to work on a work around to get ReelMagic working on ScummVM or some other way without need of the ReelMagic card.

Now we just need Reel Magic Return to Zork added to the Return to Zork collection. It shouldn't replace the proper CD-rom version but be included as a bonus... Since it does remove some puzzles and stuff.

Hopefully you keep the non-dvd versions of Grand Inquistor included as a bonus too?

Great news ! The Dvd version is simply amazing ... Now the only thing left is for that elusive mythical ReelMagic Return to Zork version or if somehow possible a merge of the proper cd-rom version with the high quality movies of the ReelMagic version !
