It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Happens on Vista and W7, not XP. Opening video does not show but sound plays. On game start the mouse is stuck at the menu bar. Cannot move it. Installed as admin, have all updates on all machines. Anyone else have this problem?
I have exactly this problem, running Win7-Ultimate-64, installed and run as admin.
I had this problem and solved it, but it took a bit of work.

First problem was a popup window telling me that the resolution wasn't optimal, and old games like Z:GI don't like being minimised like that. If you're getting similar popups, you should be able to disable "balloon notification" by right clicking your graphics card control panel in the taskbar. That solved half my problem.

Secondly, I opened up the program properties and selected compatibility mode for Windows XP (SP3), and under settings selected "640x480 resolution", "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition".

Now you'll probably get another annoying popup to screw things up again, telling you that the color scheme has been changed to WIndows 7 Basic. Click the wrench in the balloon and it'll take you to the notification area icons screen. Change the Desktop Window Manager to "Hide icon and notifications".

Now, make sure to close all background windows, it seems when I have a browser open it can cause problems too.

Restart the game and fingers crossed, everything should work okay now. If the Activision logo movie plays, you're on the right track. :) If not, you could try disabling windows Aero manually before starting the game, and that should fix it.

Hmm, it seems that the above no longer works for me. Annoying...it WAS working. I'll screw around with it more tomorrow and post findings here.

EDIT - Created a batch file to kill the explorer task to no avail. You guys might want to try it anyway, edit a notepad document and save the following as zgi.bat (or whatever you like) into your ZGI directory:

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
zpeed.exe
Start explorer.exe

add me to the problem list.
on my desktop i can switch to windowed mode and that fixes everything for these older games (2/3 of them won't run full screen at all without similar issues... i thought GoG was checking to make sure this stuff worked?)

ZGI on my laptop though refuses to go windowed no matter what i do, and its completely unplayable now...
Doing what I described above, I can get into the game sometimes, but it stutters really badly. The intro movie is unwatchable and doing anything the game itself is problematic due to the same mouse stuttering. :( I'm at a loss, I've tried all of the common solutions and I'm not really sure what else there is to do beyond trying to set up a virtual machine or something.

Same with me, game appears to be unplayable on laptops.
Same problem here on my ASUS u56 laptop--no intro movie and the mouse is stuck if I escape past the intro. Any hope for a resolution?
I am Dutch so please don't mind bad English. I have an Acer laptop with Intel. windows 7
I have had the same problems as above. After endless searching here on the GoGsite i found a solution.
I am sorry I dont know the exact words in English. I use the Dutch words when i dont know the english one.
I opened my Configuratie-panel (where you van change settings etc for your whole computer) and chose Beeldscherm (Screen)/Beeldschermresolutie/ than I clicked Advanced Settings
There I chose the tab; Intel graphics and media Control Panel
There I chose the big button below (Grafische eigenschappen) I put it in advanced modus and then chose Energy in the left menu.
After i switched that to best performance everything worked like a charm!
I hope this is understandable for you, and it can solve your problems too so you can enjoy these sweet games.
Thanks, but that didn't work. :(
I'm having the same problem as well. I've been tinkering around with the settings, in hopes of a solution, but to no avail.

Originally, I had this same problem running the game from CD, so I thought maybe the GoG version would be different. Sadly, I'm still encountering this same problem.

Perhaps I will try to run the game on a desktop since I'm seeing everyone (including myself) is having trouble with this on their laptop. I'll keep this thread on watch and hopefully we can come up with a solution for us laptop Zorkers!
Just ran this for the first time... same problem.
Chalk up another laptop user this is happening to.
I had this problem previously but had to completely reinstall windows 7. Thought I would give it another go and this time I changed the default install directory (click settings on the same page in the installer when it asks you if you have read the T&C) installed it to C:\GOG.com\Zork... and it seems to work fine now.
I know NOTHING about this game, but I just bought the retail CD version of this game, and it didn't work on one laptop. However, it worked on another one (one with a dedicated graphics card) and -- get ready for this -- an Asus eeePC netbook. On both of those machines, I didn't have to change the compatibility mode, I didn't have to disable Aero, and I didn't have to do ANYTHING other than just run the main .exe. I don't know if that helps anyone, but there you go.
