Is this a game that would be suitable to play with my 12 year old nephew and my 8 year old niece? Or with just my nephew?

IMO, the humor is gentle enough that you should be able to play it with them. Some of the more subtle jokes might go flying over their heads.
ZGI isn't even close to as dark as Nemesis is. This game is written in the more traditional Zork style.

I agree. In terms of whether they'll "get" it, they should appreciate most of the humour. Although there are political themes/jokes like corrupt governments and references to the inquisition, which they may not get.
In terms of mature content, there's almost none. There is a late-game scene involving a stripping contest, but it is in good humour and there is no nudity.
