I finished the game a while back, and just a few days ago added the HQ texture pack. Now I can't get the game to load. On launch, it shows a black window smaller than my full screen for a second or two, then disappears.

If I uninstall the texture pack I can run the game. I have it set to 3840 * 2160 fullscreen. It ran fine like this for the 80 hours I spent on my first playthrough.

I have tried verifying and repairing, uninstalling and reinstalling, & uninstalling with deleting all local data and reinstalling. The only thing that gets the game to load is uninstalling the HQ texture pack. My hardware is good, it works on other games and it worked with VIII before. I have updated my video drivers.

Anyone got some advice? Thanks!

Same problem, I did a fresh install to get any patches in the last 2 years, the installed HD textures. I get the same problem, smaller than max black screen. Doing a fresh install without adding HD textures fixed it.

Thank you very much. This hint saved me a lot of time. I just changed the drive's letter from F to G and the game is launching now with the texture pack installed.

Confirming this is still an issue. Changing the F: drive to G: drive (leaving F: unused) solves the issue.

Someone actually told me that this was apparently fixed in the Steam version of the game. Guessing we're not that important. ;_;

But in my case I have F:\ set up with something, so I'm not going to go through the entire tedious process of uninstalling and reinstalling and resetting up stuff elsewhere just to play one game... *shrug*

Thank you for this thread. I was racking my brain trying to figure out why Ys VIII suddenly stopped working. I had just upgraded my PC (new B550 mobo and R9 5900X cpu), and I thought that I had installed some bad drivers or something. Renaming my F drive worked. It is quite a shame that the GOG version still hasn't gotten a fix to this more than a year later from Hustlefan's post.

I've been having this game since a while but I couldn't start the game anymore after I added another drive to the system, bringing up the dreaded F: drive letter. I have changed that to G:, and it now works as expected.

I would love that we had the "hotfix" Steam users got....

OP here, I had completely forgot about this until today, been off playing other stuff.

Came back to reinstall Ys8, had the same problem, checked the forums, forgetting I had ever made this thread. Thanks to your wonderful contributions, it now has an answer. I had a card reader that was living as the F: drive and when I moved it to a different drive letter, Ys8 started right up!

Probably. I don't have the game to test it but I assume it does. Since it's the latest update. Also I assume that with the latest update we also received this free dlc. Maybe someone can check
